Trufa, my cat died a couple of weeks ago. Still mourning her and don't feel I want another cat soon, and a dog is out of the question.

My son just came with Emily, the guinea pig mascot they have at his classroom, we're keeping it for the holydays.

My parents had raccoons that would take the lids off of their garbage cans looking for food. My dad decided just to leave food out for them instead of trying to fight with them all the time (mostly dry dog food, leftover vegetable parts, etc.). Now, if my dad forgets to put food out, they come and knock on the door.

Mr Rid

My gray stray is a scrapper, nightly defending his bowls against coons, possums, skunks (as if he didnt stink enough already). Other neighborhood cats I used to feed, wont set foot in the yard or else he sprints down the stairs and rips them a new one. I think he takes it out on them since he cant do much about the dominant coons.

He seemed totally feral in the beginning and wouldnt let anyone within 15 feet. It took many months to earn his trust, and he was still hissing at me each time I opened the front door after nine months of spoiling him. 'Its ME already, the guy thats been feeding and brushing your ratty head every day!' I assume he was abused.

He's had an awful mouth infection for years (his neck swells at times and can barely eat) but I cant conceive how to deal with a vet. I barely managed to get him in one of those cardboard carriers once and he ripped thru it in literally two seconds. Even if I somehow got him there (they wont prescribe knockout pills), he would just be all fangs and fury.
103327

Now I never stop marveling at what an affectionate fella he's turned into. A little lovin' can make all the difference. He's like me, we both rarely leave the house, cant stand the heat, we're both sick, hiss at people, and just need a sympathetic soul willing to look past the outer pain and defense.

...Now, if my dad forgets to put food out, they come and knock on the door.

Coons are very resourceful. I watched one pull an unlocked chain off my gate and unlatch it. They will get into anything thats not very secure. I watched a momma coon hang by one foot down the inside of a large trash bin, letting her babies climb her like a rope to get in and out of the bin.

My twins, this weekend.

At first, they were so similar, we had to put different colored collars on them. Now, one weighs twice as much as the other, and their personalities are so different, we'd be able to tell them apart even if they looked identical again.

Finally managed to get my kat to the vet. He was a wild stray I have been taking care of for a few years, and was very difficult to wrangle into a container. I thought he had a dental problem, but they said he has a bad tumour under his tongue and down his throat, and it is obstructing him from swallowing food, and there is food clogged in his throat. They said the best thing was to put him down. So my little Gray friend is gone.

After all the months I spent carefully winning the trust of this feisty, hissing wolverine, it was remarkable what a sweet and affectionate little entity he transformed into. In recent years I've been thru hell with health problems, and most days the cat was the only thing to make me smile. I dont know if he may have been quietly suffering for awhile. He was at least spoiled before he had to go. Will miss a reason to smile each day when I open the front door.

Sorry to hear that Mr. Rid. We had a very loveable cat die a couple of years ago. She was very sick and the vet didn't know why without very expensive testing. One day she couldn't make it down the stairs to eat, so I picked her up to take her to the bowl, but she wouldn't eat anything. She just crawled into her little cube house. My wife found her there the next morning, like she just went to sleep. I still miss that little poop.

The good news is, there are plenty of cat friends out there just waiting for us to adopt them and take them home where they can live like kings and queens.

I lost my gray buddy this week as well. She was active but had stopped eating so took her to the vet. Blood & urine tests revealed that she had a pancreatic infection, but the real problem was she also had feline HIV and probably had it since birth. She came from the Humane Society and they don't test for that as it's still a pretty expensive test. Will have my other fur friend tested soon.

The vet was hydrating her and tried appetite stimulants but to no avail. Liver and other systems were having issues now so no real hope. Had to put her down Tues morning.

I suspect that I must have a defective fur unit then as contact in all the marked petting areas seem to initiate purr mode. Unit is well out of warranty though and it doesn't seem worth the bother to take in just to get that fixed, although the clock mechanism is also erratic for the morning feeding setting and I've yet to find the snooze alarm button.

We adopted one once that had been raised with raccoons. He'd stand in the water bowl (large goldfish bowl w/o the fish), drop his dry crunchies in it until they swole up, then fish them back out. He was aptly named Gonzo.

I just lost my companion of the last 8 years, Ginger (a Siamese/Tabby mix), to Feline Peritonitis. :( It's not the same without a cat around here, so a co-worker has a cat that his family can't take care of anymore, so I'm taking the fluff monster in (Dante is a big domestic longhair with a sweet personality...). It might not be quiet here in the evenings anymore, but it won't be lonely either.

Well, are very happy that this thread got revived. Looked through the whole of it and had some good laughs and some tears. Gotta contribute.

We do cat rescue and currently have 12, down from 14. The numbers fluctuate around that mark from natural causes: old age, disease, and from other "natural causes"--predators. Some just how up here. Some we go and get.

We're up in the mountains on the coast of Central California and have Mountain Lions, Bobcats, Foxes, Coyotes, Racoons, Vultures, Great Horned Owls and a few big snakes. The snakes are good varieties, except for the Rattlers. One nearly took the life of one of our Bengals. Bit her in the hand.

Three of our kids have gone missing in the past two years; one seven months ago and a third this past month. We're pretty sure that the owls were responsible for the first; maybe for all. It isn't that we don't take care and watch out for them. Sometimes you just can't do enough; especially when they're predominantly outdoor cats. They are closer to nature than we and are predators, themselves. Live by the sword. Die by the sword. In addition, some of the kids are Bengals or Bengal mixes and, as such are very intelligent and decidedly headstrong. The loss of one of these is chronicled on BengalMania (http://bengalmania.org/cats/whither-thou-goest-blinky/); so named for the decidedly energetic nature of the breed. Mornings are an adventure, to say the least.

The most recent loss, Luna--a Maine Coon, was pretty much an outdoor cat but we had been working with her to lessen that tendency and it had been very successful. She began to really become less aggressive, more affectionate, part of the family and only go out to patrol and take a dump; then come right back in. She always stayed right close to the house and we provided a porthole up high on the kiln room wall where she could go and sleep in a warm place if we weren't around to let her in or she was in danger. This worked for years without incident.

One night, I let her out, as was her routine, and she never came home. Just disappeared. No trace.

Just like Blinky, we keep the porch lights on every night in case she got driven off and might happen this way and see our home. The hope wanes, however as the days pass. Tears come when you least expect them.

We live in Los Angeles but surprisingly we get skunk, possum, and racoon visitors in our backyard. And I've seen rabbit, coyote and deer in my in-laws' neighborhood. Crazy city wildlife.

We have them here in Carmel Valley. Also Mountain Lion, Red Fox, Kit Fox, Grey Wolf, Coyote & Great Horned Owls. All of them beautiful and impressive, even if they occasionally take one of our headstrong, stubborn cats that don't come in at night when they're called. We protect them as much as possible but, sometimes, there's only so much you can do.

The Mountain Lion female took down a deer inside our perimeter fence one day and the next night there were three extra sets of eyes in the flashlight beam; lower to the ground and closer together, with the Mom resting not far away between her cubs and the studio. Three days later, the deer was all but gone and the California Vultures cleaned the rest over then next few days.

That said, what is the method used to display videos in a post? I've tried the "Embed Video" button, inserted the iframe embed code from Vimeo, and just simply pasted in the URL to it. None of them show up as a video player in here. Grrrr.

EDIT: Ok, got it. Have to manually insert the provider;identifier into the video tag. Surely, there must be a more automatic way of doing this?

We have catwalks in the main room and bedroom above door height. They both lead around a couple of walls to a crow's nest where they can sleep/hang out and survey their realm. The one in the bedroom actually leads to a floor to ceiling book case, the top three levels of which are now reserved for them.

I think I posted some pictures of these guys in another thread as a distraction from all the grumbling, but this a more appropriate place for them. Little Kitty adopted us about a year ago and as you can see he is quite comfortable in his new role as Head of Household...he is very bossy. He also brought Scruffy out the shadows. Scruffy is still a bit wild and timid, but he lets me gently pet him and he usually then flops over and rolls around...dangerously cute. The two of them are classic frenemies

This guy started visiting us on and off in 2015. After asking a few neighbors etc we assumed he was homeless, but he must have had a home before. If the had an owner at the time, he/she was not very good at taking care of the cat. He was somewhat approachable, but unkempt, rough fur, scabs, looked underweight (no on this photo, thanks to us :) ), no tags, etc. We (carefully) took him to a vet for a bit of cleanup and a checkup. Whenever he visited we fed him and tried to hold him overnight but he always wanted to leave, rain, snow, hot, cold or whatever. One time he was gone for weeks and still came back. Another day he left and never came back.

Speaking of Rogue Cats, we've a feralish couple of the surviving litter plus Momma in the complex that several of us take care of and the male looks very similar to your guy here. I don't have a shot of him but should be easy to get.

But it made me think of cats that adopt you for brief periods then move on. Had a few over the years but a recent one had “complexity”.

This is Evil Twin:

Who still demanded to be fed and would be very vocal until he was and yet still bat at me.

See, I never saw them at the same time. Just in the morning & at the front door. One time ornery as Hell, the next time friendly & talkative. Went on for months until I saw Edger inside on one of the current favorite cat chair/pillows and Evil Twin outside at the door.

I'd been Chip'n'Daled by two cats.

Since this had gone on over a few weeks, I casually mentioned to E. that if this was gonna be official, we need pay a visit to the vet and that we could go the next Saturday.

Of course come Sat., I notice I hadn't seen him all day.

Now here comes the really weird part. I did snap a shot of what I thought was Edger earlier that week. I mean just how many new B&W cats are you expecting to come in thru the cat door & make themselves at home? It wasn't until I was sorting these shots that I realized: THIS ISN'T EDGER!!

Bwah! Quoted for the most fun thing I've read in a while.

Cats is cray-cray.

Ah, well the real thing happened a few years ago when my neighbor was getting back from a several week away trip. Small complex of 10 bungalow apts. I hear him unloading his car so think nothing of it. Then loud, frantic knocking on back door ~ 7:30PM. Wide-eyed, not completing sentences, how has he survived this long on his own neighbor John manages to piece together that there's something in his front room. I had to deduce that it wasn't there before he left & not inanimate.

Sure enough, a tell tale bulge in the vertical blinds and a slow move of one of said blinds had me staring eye to eye at one of the courtyard's sterling examples of a fox squirrel.

We, (neighbor John & I), try to come up with a plan to corral the critter towards the very nearby front door. Fortunately, there's not much furniture yet quite a few boxes from delivery's that have been accumulating. It was all logical to us anyway, but not to Squirrel. He just skittered around obstacles and ended up diagonally opposite where he was, meaning we had to rebuild our maze.

This went on for 20-30 mins. taking great care that he doesn't get into the ... oh, no. He got past us & into the kitchen & up in the stove. Fortunately I had a technique for this but I didn't want to bring in cat technology as when the story involved a rather large rat. Some say the difference is just the busy tale, but that's another topic. Anyway, we constructed the needed diverting walls & whanged on the top of the stove & succeeded into getting him out & back into the living room. Sometimes it feels good just getting back to zero, ya know?

Well, this went on for another 10 or 15 or so minutes more at least. Broom handle & empty wrapping paper tube technology was implemented. And it was during this semi remote poke-flushing & body blocking that I was jabbing at where Squirrel was last known to be but not quite visible, and yet he skittered FROM an entirely different part of the room. Then it dawned on me.

When I visually confirmed that there were in fact two squirrels, I ended up fetally on the floor, paralyzed with laughter. Think I had to 'splain or at least remind neighbor John who Chip 'n Dale were but he seemed to understand w/o breaking out the DVD's.

I eventually recover and the rest is a blur, but we somehow encourage the squirrels that out is better. My ribs still hurt for the next couple days though.

Now back to your regularly planned Sunday evening, still in progress.

Just always remember: Cats are generous enough to allow humans to look after them for as long as it suits their purposes :D

One day, I hope to be wealthy enough to allow a cat to adopt me as their pet human :)

I wonder what Ginger would look like in a space suit?

We have catwalks in the main room and bedroom above door height. They both lead around a couple of walls to a crow's nest where they can sleep/hang out and survey their realm. The one in the bedroom actually leads to a floor to ceiling book case, the top three levels of which are now reserved for them.

They reach the catwalks by climbing towers placed at one end and then jumping up.

My cats would looove this!

The Haven Humane Society in Redding is currently accepting donations to help pay for the medical costs of several animals that were severely burned in the Carr Fire.

“A few of the injured kittens we are treating from the Carr Fire,” the Haven Humane Society shared on Facebook along with these photos. “Please send them your love!”

This is actually a positive addition.

My buddy Jonas was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given 5 weeks to live (that was Apr 1, 2018)
We opted for a mandiblectomy to save his life and he is doing freaking awesome almost 4 months later.
The experience sucked balls for us and for him, but he was worth the $$$$$ and the effort.
F*CK CANCER!

This is Jonas now, “bunny kicking” the **** out of a tennis ball, and just being a normal cat.
Eating eveything he did before including hard food

very cool. in a couple weeks it will be a year since Baby Silvester was given a couple weeks and had nearly half his jaw replaced with plastic. Other then tipping his head to one side when he eats, he is just like he was before and doing totally well. Hell, they gave my mother 6 months about 5 years ago and at this point she has only slowed down just a bit. I don't think they are very good at those sorts of guesses. Maybe it's like Mr Scott from Star trak, they give you a really short date and a dire result, then look like a hero when that doesn't happen...... except he told them a long time and then got things fixed fast....

Nice!
It is so good to hear that your cat is doing so well after a year!
There is very little information on the interweb about these things.
I made a point of contacting the specialist that did the operation, just to give them some positive news (I think I may have been the only one to ever do that judging by their reaction)

Cheers! Here’s to many more years with our furry friends.

Ginger Reminds me of my youtube channel avatar image, which by the way happen to be a norwegian forrest cat going by the name of Maya..she´s living with my niece.
I love that cat cuase she´s always giving up a high pitched squeek when I visit, and always bites me in the nose..with love of course, can´t recall exactly how old she is now..maybe 13 years.
