OK guys this is really baking my noodle and I need some help...

I have a scene with 2 objects one is static and the other is a moving control null that moves down the Y axis and into the static object.

I want to use a gradient node to control transparency on the static object so that it gradually disappears from the top down with a soft edge so I need a way to control the position of the gradients start and end points in relation to the control null so that they stay a set distance ahead and behind of it as it moves.

There used to be a runway lights tutorial on Youtube that showed how to do this but it's been set to private now and I can't remember how to do it. It's probably really easy but I can't figure it out.

Have you tried adding a Scalar Layer node with a gradient set to Y Object Distance?

Actually, I meant something like this, but I think I like XswampyX's solution better.
