i keep butting up against an inescapable conclusion - everything i do seems look better in vpr than f9 renders - edges look much more natural and less harsh - now there is more aa settings than you can shake a stick at so does anyone know what settings will give me something that looks more like what you get from vpr?

What resolution ru usually working on? Think VPR is always screen resolution... did u try to low res ur renders to fit ur screen as VPR... besides that I think VPR may have some kind of "blurring" apllied to edges or something similar... are u using draft or final quality VPR mode?

resolution is usually pretty much the same - i'm just playing really so dont need it more than 1900x1200 - suprisingly i just checked at it is draft setting - still gives great results - switching draft off though and results are better yet

colour space is set to linear for both

i do think it is actually a slightly blurring going on too but does so in a very subtle way without really hurting the resolving power - a simple example of where vpr is better is making a starscape - vpr some of the fainter/smaller stars are almost or even completely invisiable - f9 they are all very hard and pixel looking

is annoying trying to so a space animation and cant get realistic looking stars from f9
