It seems to me that there should be way (via nodes or plugin) to use a rendered exr sequence that has depth information and do "in-camera" compositing in LW.
For instance you could render out a sequence saving depth information in the exr.
Then set up a new scene using the same camera setup, lights etc and new objects for pass two. You could then have the node or plugin determine if an object's pixel is in front of or behind the pre-renderd depth information and display or mask that pixel accordingly.

Is it feesible?

Would there be any advantage to doing this in a compositing package?

Instant feed back on the composting (instead of rendering pass 2 then composting). Plus with large scenes it would really allow you to reduce the scene for pass two. The way I envision it you could just have pass two elements and the background (exr depth image).
Some people do passes for fine tuning in post...and the above method really wouldn't help. I'm thinking about in terms of getting more geometry in the shots...more detail. It would help with scenes that become too big for the system to handle.

Yes it is all doable without. That is how I do it now...but sometimes it's hard to envision pass two without pass one in the scene.

Are you looking for instant feedback regarding zdepth?
extrader uses viper to view zdepth in scenes and adjustable in realtime.

No. I have extrader and it is very helpful...it is what I use to get my work out to after effects. I'm looking for a way to actually combine passes together in LW...ideally it would go as this:

Render pass one (let's say a street scape...buildings and streets)
use the camera setup and lighting from pass one to set up scene 2. Let's say pass 2 is a bunch of invading robots.

Use a node or plugin that would evaluate the pixels of the robots from pass two and determine if it is in front of or behind the pixel information of pass one.

Awesome. I've never seen those before and they look to be helpful and affordable too.

Now if that could be done while in LW. Imagine moving an object in your pass 2 scene and as you move it around, LW would reorder the pixels from phase 1 to be in front of your object or behind.

Thanks for the info, though. I'm gonna check them out again.

Thanks!
