I am trying to creat saturn's rings. I need to be able to move the camera close and amungst the rocks of the ring. I thought I could mix the standard ring method with some particles but I cannot figure out how to base the particle birth location on the surface value. I could also try using a texture but I cannot seem to figure out how to us a flat strip of the rings and project it in a ring shape for the particles.

Anyone have ideas?

Why not use a simple disc object to be the rings, and texture it using a gradient based on distance to origin, this'll give you concentric bands. You can then use the same gradient, but converted to greyscale to act as an alpha for particle placement/generation.

I donīt understand the problem here..check this simple particle birth setup with ripple procedural on birth rate for rings.
Lightwave 10.0 scenefile.

I would suggest create another emitter or clone it, and increase amount and change size for very tiny dust particles, or use geometry.

the size is puny thou, you have to redo it or rescale.

change amount of rings with wavelength value settings.

XswampyX...nice 3 millions? weird that you can get instanced objects with such amount, but you cant get over 1 million particles.
