Is there a way to bevel an object in such a way that I get "strong" edged quads (model will be sub-d)? Example attached.

Thought I'd ask this first before I spend the rest of the evening manually adding points/edges and merging polys (there's a lot of them).......

Not that I'm aware of, it's the nature of bevel that it will give you that diagonal slice.
I'd personally do some "manual" tweaking on the object if i wanted that result, kill the end poly, flatten, extend using LWCAD's move snap action.
If someone else knows otherwise, I'd also be interested to hear. :)

On rectangular forms, use the knife tool and make cuts close to the edge.

Thanks for the responses. I ended up doing the old knife and merge poly trick, took ages, especially having the weld points together. Surely there's something out there at can bevel using another type of method?
