Speed Modelling Challenge #155 – Hats & Headwear.
*************************************************
Rules:

1. Every week there will be a subject for you to model along with a time limit. You should spend no longer than the allocated time, then post a render of your model. As in most challenges like this, your honesty on modeling times is essential. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what is asked for.
2. Post a wire-frame and a render at 800x600 or larger.
3. LightWave must be used for modeling. 3rd party Plug ins are allowed.
4. You can enter as many times as you like, posting each in this thread. If you run over the time, the model can still be posted but won't be subject to the judging.
5. Time spent on texturing, setting up a scene for a render and rendering is not included in the allocated period.
*************************************************

This week's topic is : Hats & Headwear

Time Limit - 60 minutes. Something that makes you look mean, something that makes you just that bit more of a gentelman, something which makes you look cool, something that makes you look utterly insane or stupid, or something with more practical uses like keeping your head warm :) Bring em' on and I'll take my hat of too ye

Deadline: Wed. 18th January 2012. 22:00 G.M.T

Cool hat.

I can see how that was created. Could that been done in 60mins with a bit of forward planning? I did a tennis racket once, and I presume the mesh would be similar... just knowing when and where the bends occur.

Have an idea for this week's comp.

its like the tutorial for the mic mesh. same technique I think.

Sweet XswampyX !

Once created one of these. Remade it in about 40 mins total.

At BLR there's the LWCAD 4.0 contest is running (http://files.designburo.nl/lw//modules/fmcontent/content.php?topic=other&id=10&page=lwcad-4-contest-index). I would have thought some of you guys would have entered by now.
Most likely there will be around 6 entries in total or so.
You guys all have LWCad 4 or you don't need/want it? Just curious.

Ciao!

Chco2. I wouldn't be offended. I think it's just because a lot have already got LWCAD. That's all.

Because the comp is 'what methods would have made this easier to model a building' when a lot of people have already bought the solution, because they needed the solution to better their workflow.

Nope, 15 mins after copious amounts of lager (it's Friday, so it's darts night) :D

I've redone it for you, and recorded it. Hic.

I was at a loose end today so I thought I'd have a go at my first speed model...

I was going to model a baseball cap but I couldn't find mine so I modelled another cap I had lying around. I made several attempts at rail-cloning some stitching but eventually gave up. Not counting the stitching attempts it was about 30 minutes in total then I spent a little while playing around in Layout.

OT, is the AA broken in 10.1? This is the first thing I've rendered in it and I had to ramp up the settings way past what I'd normally use to get rid of jagged edges. I'm hoping 11's new AA stuff improves things otherwise I'm going back to 9.6.

AA isn't broken afaik, just changed. Use some adaptive sampling or mimic the old AA by using an oversample of around 0.5, or do both oversampling AND adaptive..

No apparently it is broken, it doesn't recognise the linear colour space settings introduced in 10.1 so the settings I'd often use in 9.6 are nowhere near enough to remove aliasing. That simple hat render required 7AA passes, AS at 0.01 and oversample of 0.6 and I wouldn't say that it was particularly complex. In 9.6 I'd rarely need anything higher than 1-3 x AA, 0.01-0.03 AS and 0.6 oversample so render times have gone through the roof. :foreheads

Ok,

Here's my first entry. It's something all professionals working in VFX will need...

I give you the Starbucks homemade headgear cup holder (made from 100% recycle cardboard).

Modeled in 42 mins (time-lapse available from my site: http://rsldesigns.co.uk/2012/01/smc-hats-with-time-lapse/)

Texture: 2 hrs

Rigged: (needed to rig the straws into position): 30mins

Cheers,

Ricky.

Great work folks. Love the detail on the Greek helmet and the Starbucks drip feed :D

As a Mad Men fan I had to try a trilby (or is it a Fedora?)
Modelling time: ridiculous-not even prepared to say how far over the limit I went! :hey:

It's what you know and how well you can use it. Trying my best to make everything nodes at the mo, to increase why speed and workflow. Never really got my head round gradients though.

Keep watching and you will understand that this entry is the best of all.

I like Traveler's model, its the best. I like Traveler's model, its the best. I like Traveler's model, its the best.

Whoa...

At any rate, since this category seems like it might be for two weeks and I did a simple little gadget cap at first, I thought I'd try something more complex. Inspired by XswampyX.. I tried a helm. It took me double the time and its not perfect, but I think I'm progressing. I know I still have a long way to go.

@bax33: what a brave attempt to pull that off in 60 mins dude. Yes, it might have taken double the time, but you are clearly getting better.

Oh... Wait... No.... Can't take my eye's off traveler's hat... Must stop watching the............... must resist.....

XswampyX - Straw Hat: Excelent use of some very smart and advanced modeling method... Would have loved to see it a little less symmetrical if you know what I mean.

chco2 - Top Hat: Very spot on and a good looking hat that is... imagine there could be a rabbit in there somewhere. Simple and good polyflow that manages to give it just the form and curvature it needs.

biliousfrog - Cap: Dude the render you posted doesn't do that model justice... I opened up the lwo file and took a loot and thats a very impressive and clean model for just 30 minutes.... I think unfortunantly that the rules state that you should post some wireframe pictures of the model, but you did on the other hand post the entire model, so I'm not sure if that means disqualification or not :/ couse it's a brilliant model!

Rabbitpenny - Indian hairband: Very structured and smart modelling method you've used, Would have loved too see a bit more randomness on the decorative stones/thingies, but I'm pretty sure that the model would hold up pretty nicely in everything except an extreme close-up. Smart work with the feather. Texture also look good, except for the stones/gems.

XswampyX - Greek helmet: Superb modeling, soooo clean and so effective ! Of course kuzey's textures make it look totally awesome, but then seeing the wireframe, they don't look any less awesome :)

Bax33 - Propeller Hat: Simple and very effective modeling. And I can see it could easily be upped in Sub-D resolution and should deform nicely with some dynamics or even a bit up deformation maps to add some wrinkles and stuff.

Waves of light - StarbucksDispensingHeadgear: I love the idea... I love everything about it and it should be a standard office supply in anye computer related work. Good execution and creative idea as well ! Good texturing work as well and attention to details make come alive.

Iain - Mad Men Hat: Probably the most osom looking Hat model I've seen so far.... Would love too see some wires! Too bad it's over the time limit :/

.....And let's get on with it, since I'm allready way too late to pronounce the winner, let's not wait any more :D I have too give the victory over too XswampyX for his Greek Helmet, it's perhaps borderlining on being inside the subject of this speedmodeling challenge, but then again I wasn't more specific than this, and as a very very practical headwear, it gets the first prize :)

The helmet idea was taken from another thread on here, I had already modelled this before.... makes it so much easier.

I think we are all waiting for waves of light to start the next one.

Well done XswampyX, and such a simple executing of quad cutouts to final model, really thanks for sharing that.. bit of an eye-opener. See Bax33, I've been using LW for years and still I learnt a new method of modelling by XswampyX.

Well done ArtGoblin, really enjoyed that one.

Ok, if it's me to do the next one, I take it it will run from the time I start it, for the duration of one week? Errrrmmm back in sec with an idea....
