Though I owned the albums, can't say I stayed a Pantera fan for long .. the music was fun, but seemed over-produced in the studio .. and then I listened to the lyrics and got annoyed .. ;)

But I came across this '3D' video from them from way back then .. anyone know more about it ?

Impressive amount of work, if it's 20 years old. Looks pretty bad, even for then, but the animation is good.

If it was a one-man shop, I'd be gob-smacked.

Heh. I feel for the person that animated that snake. Wasn't easy, was it?

I LOVE Pantera. I saw them about six or seven times in Ohio, where I grew up. The club where Darrel was tragically murdered in Columbus was about an hour from my house. Thankfully I wasn't there that night, though I've seen many shows there.

It doesn't look like ray-traced 3d, but old school gfx generation, similar as 3d gfx cards.

what?
It's just sinus (with variable start angle) multiplied by another sinus (0 at head, and 180 degree at tail)

wiki says "A video was produced for the song. All of the computer-generated visuals for the video were taken from Karl Sims digital animation "Panspermia" produced for the 1991 SIGGRAPH conference. The "Planet Caravan" video has been omitted from recent Pantera music video collections."

At that time, programmers were coding demos. Not making such effects in 3d applications.
Exploding particles is piece of cake to make. Just couple math operations per frame to handle gravity..

I recall seeing parts of the video, mainly the seeds, trees growing, other plants and the snake on a "best of 3d" compilation VHS tape in early/mid 1990s. I never realized they were from a Pantera music video.

EDIT:
Sensei, I think that "Panspermia" indeed was the name of the clip on those VHS tapes.

I remember that I was quite impressed back then.

Those plant shots look like PANSPERMIA, a CG short that got a lot of attention in the early 90s

According wiki it's reverse. First was 3d effects, then they're used in clip.

Right :)
Wiki refreshed my mind. I saw it on "beyond the mind's eye" compilation. The author used a CM-2 supercomputer for the animation and rendering.
