I noticed you talked about characters, etc. Are these tutorials project-based, or more of a tricks and techniques type of learning experience? Also; not sure if I read it, what version of LW are you using in these tutorials, and are the techniques version irrelevant (ie., tools, etc)?

The book is software independent. So what I cover applies to all 3d modeling apps. Half the book is project based, where I walk through creating specific models... the important part is that I explain why I do things.

The book was written to make you a better modeler by teaching you how to think like a modeler and to become a better problem solver... not to have you follow steps.

This book doesnt replace the LW manual in any way... very few specific tools are covered.... its about the process... not the individual steps.

hope that helps answer your questions.

The info I wanted to write about goes beyond any software specific topics... I'm more interested in covering things like topology, professional modeling practices, and the whys of modeling. That info is far more valuable IMHO and it's what most artists need to know before worrying about how to work the bevel tool.

I also was lucky to get several artists I respect to help contribute to the book. Chapter 2 is a real treat in this regard.

I cant wait for everyone to get their hands on this book... I'm very excited!

This is one irritation with Kindle books. If there is a disc, the Kindle version doesn't usually include it. Hopefully that won't be the case here (or the disc will be downloadable for those purchasers).

I think this will help out quite a bit. I believe there are quite a few of us that started learning the other way around, tools first then modeling. If we can get the hows and whys of a model being created, it may make more sense.

This reminds me of computer programming also. There are a lot of concepts that are independent of particular languages or tools, yet most people only end up learning them either indirectly, or believing they are a language issue, and may need experience with several languages before they even recognize them. Computer programming is about problem solving, and the languages are only a means toward that end, but lots of people get hung up on the language(s).

Yep; they do that for books, games, etc. As soon as it's available, and you've already paid for it...they ship it to you immediately. ;)

I'll probably pre-order next time I have the cash in the old account; that way it's bought and paid for (and out of the way).

Yes, on amazon there is a "tell the publisher I'd like to read this on Kindle" thing you can click on on the left, although if a digital version is already planned, it probably won't really help, and also not sure why its not showing up (they do pre-orders for kindle books as well). The publisher must not have announced (or whatever the term is) the digital version yet for whatever reason.

I'm not sure but will ask the publisher. If the files aren't available to ebook purchaces just pm me and we can work out a way to get u files.

The lw videos are just some of my old time favs. The zbrush videos are from Glenn Southern showing the sculpt from one of the chapters and all the images from the book are on DVD as well

it's more about the book then the DVD. The DVD is merely bonus.

Hope that helps explain it a bit more

I asked Peachpit Press about this title and how eBooks handle the media files (like the DVD). Here is the answer Geneva sent to me -

Hi Rob,

Thank you for contacting Peachpit Press. All of Peachpit's eBooks contain the same content as the print copies. In terms of media content, you should find a link within the first or last few pages of each eBook that will direct you to the media files. Often eBooks open to the first page of the first chapter, and you must scroll back several pages to get to the front matter where the URL is located. For more current titles, you can locate the URL after the index.

Some other helpful tips: If you are able to search the book, search for 'Where are the lesson files?' Go to the very last page of the book and scroll backwards.

If you are using a Kindle device or an iPad, it will not be able to access the files directly, but entering the URL into a computer with web access will allow you to get to the files.

Note: If you are using an iPad to access your eBook, it is possible that your display settings will cut off part of the URL. You can correct this by either reducing your font size and/or turning your iPad to a landscape view.
The full URL should now be visible.

Best wishes,

Geneva

Hey William, is there any reason why you went book form instead of all video? Not having seen it yet, it would seem to make more sense for this kind of stuff to actually see examples in action vs. reading.

I think when u read the book (or flip thru it at store) it will become more apparent. A good portion of the book is better suited for print IMHO. I wont even try and argue the value of video but I think both have their place. Info covered in this book is not software specific as well. Its info that I think everyone should know... not just users of one specific 3d software.

There are several chapters that walk you thru the modeling process but that is only a portion of the book.

Chapter 2 alone justifies book form imho.

I'll see if I can get a few people to share their thought son this subject that have read the book already.

I'm sure you'll see plenty of new videos from me in 2012 as well :)

We all certainly love Will's videos, but while I haven't read the entire book yet, from what I have, there's a significant amount of non-procedural information presented. It's very much more than a simple book of step-by-step instructions. Videos are always nice, but I think for the subject, and especially the way Will presents it, it's much better served by a book. There's so much useful information that you'll want to refer back to again and again, and it's much easier to do that with a book than a video.

Just my 2 cents.

William,
I bet if you ever decide to do a commercial video series, you will find quite a few takers. If you do, I would like to recommend that the series be offered in a broke down ala carte besides the full series. Did I say that right? I mean to allow those that can not afford to buy the entire series all at once a chance to buy one at a time. I think you will find many more getting it.
But alas, thats just a wish list started for ya.

Note to ebook users, I had no problems downloading the epub formated ebook from the peachpit press store, adding it to calibre ebook manager and then copying it to both my ipad and nook. Both devices have no problems with the images or the formating as far as I can tell.

I didn't worry about the digital content of the included dvd b/c I got a physical edition as well.

We have a rule in my house for Christmas: don't buy necessities, like clothes (especially ties, socks, or underwear). Christmas is a time for being frivolous and gratuitous! So yeah, I could've gotten Proton's book for Christmas if "Santa" hadn't blown the wad on other stuff! :cursin:

I'm looking forward to ordering at the end of this month but the preview on Amazon leaves something to be desired. It's all introduction and chapter listings with one page of the actual book to preview. That said, I know coming from William Vaughn that it will be worth it so count me in and thank you, William!

Sadly we are at the arse end of the world..... but at least we are moving north 60mm a year! Unfortunately I believe I will have somewhat kicked the bucket before continental drift comes to the rescue!

So you will just have to give us some really annoying reviews!

William,

I received my book yesterday. I have been busy reading and had the first time today to respond. Great book.

I really like the way you have put together this book and the focus on modeling.

I find the conversation style and your sharing tips on success in this smaller world. I like what you have published and I have found the book to be one that I will keep for reference after completing it. I look forward to see more tutorials to complement the new book.

Thanks,

aj

everyone has asked how I model characters so I made sure there was plenty of character modeling in the book :)

Indeed there is!

Some of you may be aware of my many years of struggle in trying to model anything even remotely resembling a human being. That's because, as I posted before, I am not an artist: I am a video editor.

Well, William, I just want you and everyone reading this to know that after sitting down with your book and working through the some of the edge-extension modeling, I think I've finally arrived at a decent looking nose!

I am absolutely sincere when I write this, I've been trying to get anything - even just a nose - to look this good for 4 years! What finally got me there were the excellent illustrations your book provides.

Thank you, again! (And I'll keep working to get the rest of the head done, too. Will keep you all posted on the progress!)

Actually, my daughter at the DAVE school gets some credit, too. Here is a model she walked me through while she was at home during Christmas break. We both worked on our own version of it using the same reference image. Hers is way better!

Takes a long time to teach old dogs like me new tricks.

I ordered the book yesterday also so it'll get to me on Tuesday. I hope you can ask your publisher about getting the content of the disc to your kindle buyers. I ended up getting the book version cause of the disc even though I wanted the Kindle version more (ahh shelf space you are so finite). It's just my slightly compulsive behavior, I know I wouldn't be able to stop thinking something was missing if the disc content wasn't available to me when I was reading the book ;). Looking forward to reading through the book though.

noses are very tricky to model, often requires a custom made polyflow, depending.
i sometimes recommend mixing SubD modeled noses with displacement / normal maps...

Updating the progress I've made on the head model I'm doing using William's book as a guide. I took your book to work tonight and showed the station's artist, as well as one of the stagehands interested in doing 3D. Good reviews from both. When I show them this finished model, you may get a couple more sales!

I'm only up to page 40 so far, like to take my time. What I have found, it is really easy to read and well organized.I'm more of a visual learner so I normally struggle with books, but "digital Modeling" has good ratio of pictures to written text.

Spent some time this morning adding to the head model I've been doing based in the information in William's book. By this point in previous attempts, I've gotten hopelessly tangled in the mesh, not knowing what to do or where to build onto the model next. Frustration sets in and I usually give up.

Not this time.

Just for grins, I decided to look back on my hard drive for my very first attempt at modeling a human head. I found it. It's the first image I uploaded in the series of screen grabs. I made it on 6-17-09.

After many failed restarts, I finally arrived at the next significant model on 3/22/11 (second image.)

And finally, where I am today, in large part because of a few simple tips my daughter taught me over the Christmas break and Williams's excellent book.

(You all can buy William's book...you can't have my daughter!)

All this is to say that I am very pleased with the results I'm getting from William's instruction and highly recommend this book!

Wrote my review on Amazon, William. Can't say enough good things about the book or your excellent contributions to the 3D community. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

And now, here's the latest update on the head model I've been doing based on the techniques presented in your book.

As my reference didn't have visible ears, I used Taron's "extend-stretch-shape" technique on the polys where the ear should be. It's the first time I've ever gotten a head model far enough to even attempt the ears which remain a pain. Ears, not so good. But I'll keep working on it: next time with a better reference.

Wasn't sure about how soon I wanted to buy this book, budget reasons and all. But when I saw the table of contents (More specifically chapter 15) I ordered it. I've read a significant portion now and I have to say it is more than worth the investment. Thanks!

There is a little more clarification I could use on copyrighted material and references.
When it comes to modeling objects like aircraft, vehicles, and items on the market, is there a point at which the line is crossed in the reference material you use? (example: a blueprint with a copyright or proprietary notice) And I'm more referring to models that might be put up for sale. And is there a time that regardless of the reference, you don't put a model up for sale?

Also, how about a situation where you help a client with the product design? After it goes to market what would you be able to do with the models? And under what circumstances?

I hope to eventually put models on the market. It would be nice to nail this down, I'm feeling a big fog of uncertainty with some of this.

I've seen the video and read the book on this one, and I still have no idea how William made the connection between a tetrahedron and a sphere, let alone a sphere with the correct patch shapes.

Not saying this is a poor method. I'm just amazed that he can make a connection like that.

And disappointed that I can't. Not even after having it laid out step by step.

Just bought the kindle version, and like others have mentioned, I'm keen to download the DVD bonus material too.

If the dvd content was made available as a public link for download, it would not affect sales at all - in fact would encourage more e-book purchases from people knowing they won't miss out on the bonus content.

And since it's all about the book, as stressed earlier, then why not just provide a link to the bonus content right here in this thread if it's not something planned to be sold on its own?

How about this: give us a link right here, and in return I'll post a top quality review of your book on Amazon. Sound like a deal? :-)

You can get the link to the content by registering the Kindle book on Peachpit.com and contacting Peachpit's cs. Tell them you can't find the information in the Kindle book that states how to get the DVD content.

I did, and after convincing them that the information was not in the Kindle edition, I received a link to download the files. I would post the link, but I don't have the approval to give it out. Sorry.

I'm in the process of downloading the files now. If you get the link to the files, there is a option in the upper left of the page to download all files at once. This seems to be going faster than using the individual links. There is about 3.6 gb of content to download.

Good luck.
