Has anyone written an ellipsoidal gear generator for LWM?

I don'think you can just use Stretch on a circular gear to get them, because the teeth wind up being non-radial.

(If the GEAR routine shipped w/LWM were an LScript, it could probably be retro-fitted to make ellipsoidal gears.)

Tnx

Have you thought about making one by hand in illustrator or photoshop and extrude it in lightwave?

Here is a quick example done in Illustrator.

Nice. My AI-fu is weak though: could you toss me a hint? Was it laborious?

Tnx.

Not really.
Create the shape of the tooth and create an pattern brush.
Create two elliptical shapes -Copy the original then paste in front. To make sure they are aligned.
Apply the pattern to the top circle
Scale second circle down to just touch the bottom of the teeth
Save file...

I have noticed that you need to play around a bit, as the original circles shape can come through when saving, which craps out the shape your after. Making sure the points are merged helps. I also find it better to just assume the top circle's original shape will be the bottom of the groove between the teeth. Still working on a way to remove it completely.

For now I guess the easiest way is to edit the path in lightwave.

Select the edge loop and dissolve it, then merge polys and fix a few points.
