View Full Version : Animated cut-away question

Im working on a Mac with LW 9.

I have an interesting task/problem to accomplish involving a cutaway or cross-section view of a medical screw and its parts. I have a threaded screw piece that goes into the top cap and screws down. Thats the animation needed. The problem is that this is, indeed, a cutaway view, so the top screw is only a half-round (at any one time) and the leading and trailing edges are coming in and out of existence as it rotates and proceeds downward. Wed be looking directly at the cut away surfaces. I am wondering if there is any trick I can use to accomplish the cutaway in such a manner that it would be like a live action Boolean subtract object I can set in place in Layout or something like that that would allow me to rotate the full un-cutaway model and yet only have the back half be visible to the camera?

Otherwise, the only thing I can think of is to make many multiple slices of the model at progressive cut angles to create a bunch of versions of the model a kind of series of step images for a rougher kind of manual animation, replacing one model after another in sequence.

I can work decently in Layout, but Im not as knowledgeable in Modeler.
Your kind help and ideas are appreciated.

There's this tutorial.

What you're looking for is an animated boolean.
