Hi all,

Its been a while since i used Lightwave and now I have a project that may require i purchase the new version. The client wants to know what input/import object format i would need but i can't find out what Lightwave 10 currently supports. The new Newtek website really provides little real info on the new Lightwave product.

Can someone point me to this info?

LW supports the standard file formats that allow for exchange between apps. mdd, obj, fbx are the most used ones so as long as your client is working with something that imports/exports those you should be fine. There are other file formats too but they're more obscure.

Can you ask your client for what specific file format they want to work with?

This is more about what was added in 10 but maybe the Data Interchange Enhancements section will help.

The client they can give me pretty much any format i want. I've asked what app was used to create the original object but they have not responded yet.

I'm guessing that FBX is the new and most flexible format for interchange?

Or maybe i should ask what - is - the best interchange format?

I'd say fbx as that'll transfer the scene as a whole. Any deformations that don't transfer can be baked to mdd.

your client does not talk about CAD files, right?
that would be a whole other story...

While i don't know the app name yet, the app can export to STL, STEP, IGES, and PARASOLID formats.
