View Full Version : Modeling Anime Characters?

Does anyone know any tutorials for modelling anime characters in Lightwave? Like, anatomy, clothing, shading, rigging etc. I figure it'd be an interesting experiment, and might do a full-colour web-manga if I get the technique down right. Can anyone help me out with advice, tips, and tutorials? One of the things I'm really going to need help with is the head and the anatomy, and especially getting polymodeled hair to look and shade right, and be animatable.

Clean smooth geometry topology is important if you want cleanly shaded zones.

Out there... you know, just... out there... there's a pack called "Final Fantasy XIII Female Models" that contains models and textures. It has some very good poly hair in it that could be useful to look at. You'll have to search for it. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Jonny Gorden authored two good books for creating, rigging and animating cartoon characters back in LW8. They are old now, so the rigging in particular has changed so much now that part will be next to useless. Also, they were expensive, and definitely about cartoon characters, not anime characters at all. If you can find them cheap though they might be useful. That's might. They also might not.

Thanks, guys. I'm going to try those out. Anything more you can help with? ^^;

As for the first video, I'm not sure if I'd be able to achieve that with LW's knife tool, but I can try, all I need is a good reference.

Other than that, I'd say it's more the case that you'd learn subd modeling in general and then once you're up to speed with that, you'll find you already know how to make an anime character.

it's just that with highly stylized anatomy like manga characters you have to kinda choose what to exaggerate and what not to. But real figure drawing and sculpting always helps your style no matter what you're doing.

to create characters and you can tweak these
