Check this out guys

Fantastic Planet (French: La Planète Sauvage, lit. The Savage Planet) is a 1973 animated science fiction film directed by René Laloux, production designed by Roland Topor, written by both of them and animated at Jiří Trnka Studio. The film was an international production between France and Czechoslovakia and was distributed in the United States by Roger Corman. It won the special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. The story is based on the novel Oms en série, by the French writer Stefan Wul. A working title for the film while it was in development was Sur la planète Ygam (On the Planet Ygam).

How interesting! Thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't thought you'd be allowed to watch this film in Siberia but there you go. I'm glad for you. :-)

sure I was surprised too when I have stumbled into it by chance. I was looking for stop motion animation made by Jiri Trnka the czech animator, an eastern european Ray Harryhausen. He did really amazing stuff, the czech were in general always good with puppets. Like this (though this is not Trnka's work, but made in a studio named after him)

This kind of stuff could be made in LW and a sculpting app. I really am a fan of these, glad you enjoyed too!

Yup. My father had at home a few Czech animation films and I loved them. I wonder if one can buy DVD's from that time. I'll check.

Edit: I've just checked and there's quite a few you can buy at Amazon.com

A classic cult film.

I particularly liked Laloux' other film Les Maitres Du Temps (Time Masters) http://forums.newtek.com/showthread.php?t=122597 with designs by Moebius.

Been a long time since I saw Gandahar (Light Years) but remember it being rather boring- (nudity) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVxX1KMd2Qo

I LOVE the films of a Czech filmmaker/animator Karel Zeman, a genius at combining 2D & 3D animation with live action- 1961 Baron Munchausen- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXiIA4KVwZM&list=PLF4D4A7533C84C3DA&index=24

Masters of time yes! And it was animated in Hungary so it is more special to me.

I actually have a Super 8 Sound Film version of Fantastic Planet which I bought long ago before video was around. A Blu-ray version is available as a region B import - but not for the US which is region A, [I don't have a region free BD player]. I do have it on DVD as well, but it has "burned in" English subtitles over the English language audio track, bummer.

I worked at a theater that played 'midnight movies' like Fantastic. But I wish I'd seen Zardoz on the big screen. And have been laying down for a long time now.
