While watching the video on vimeo "a short history of CG characters in movies" I spotted a gem that I think LWavers should find pretty amazing.

In the segment about Jurassic Park at 3:55 in, pause and take a good look at whats on the monitor at that moment.

It's short, only 3 frames but very sweet.

Awesome - Old school Lightwave used in a classic!

I wonder if they used it for more than 3 frames of the final movie. :D

That's a terrific find. Thank you for posting this.

Flash-forward 18 years and LightWave's involved with another Steven Spielberg dinosaur project: TERRA NOVA. We even have one (http://ericarmstrong.net/MyFilmReels.html) of the original Jurrasic Park animators working on this show.

Sofimage 3D was the heart of the 3D pipeline for Jurassic Park and Lightwave was used for previz work as others have said.

Do you have prune juice? J/K :D

That's cool! I love JP, never gets old (aside from those Silicon Graphics workstations).

Thanks for this!

Now, where are armatures for us to use to input mocap? That was an idea that should have stuck around!!

I heard or read somewhere (can't remember TBH), that "early Maya" was used to model and Softimage|3D for animation. does anyone knows if this is true?

However, we now know that LW was there too. Thanks for the tip Ken.

Thanks for sharing, wildr3d. :)

I've known for quite some time that LW was used by Amblin Entertainment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amblin_Entertainment) (who also did the VFX for Sequest TV-series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E17xDvK8y8), even on Amigas back then) to do previs work for Jurassic Park.
