View Full Version : Phaser shadows + starfield suddenly changes color

Hey guys,

I've been using only a week lightwave and i love it. I've been building phasers thanks to lee andrews youtube channel.

It's a great tutorial but i've got a small problem.

When i fire my phaser, sometimes there are black squares (shadows) around it, making it look like a cut and paste gif phaser.

I disabled shadow cast, receive shaw in object properties of the phaser. Still no use..

I have uploaded a picture of a fight i'm making and you can see the shadow/ black on the wing of the d7 and on the saucer of the kelvin tmp..

Also sometimes my starfield suddenly changes color... Also in the picture i provided. Sometimes a part of is slightly disappeared or a section of stars are yellow and blue (if a phaser or so is fired).


Any help or so would be great guys!

Are the phasers a polygonal object? Is there any image map assigned to the geometry if it is? Can you upload the scene here to look at to help you troubleshoot things? In some cases pictures can only tell so much.

Also i was using classic camera instead of perspective...

Did you try the Perspective Camera for a render? What are/were your results? Classic Camera is basic LW Camera from early LW release, and Perspective Cam is newer and has much better options.

Better, but still, i can see a shadow on my saucer.. The shadows are (shadow cast etc) are all disabled for the phasers..

Is Ray Trace Shadows turned off in the Render Globals > Render > Panel as well? Raytrace Transparency off too?

What type of Lights are you using in the scene?

What version of Lightwave?

I'm using lightwave 10.

I'm using the light distant for everything and as a phasersource, i'm using a point (with lensflare).

Raytrace shadows are turned on in the panel as is the raytrace transparency.

You said you had Raytracing and Raytrace Transparency turned ON?

Turn them OFF!

Or, if you need to raytrace shadows for ships etc., go to the Object Properties panel for the Phaser object and turn OFF [uncheck] Self Shadow, Cast Shadow, and Receive Shadow.

BTW, LW10 defaults to Raytracing features "on". In earlier versions, I believe, it was not enabled this way.

Let me know if this helps? If not, I'm not sure what else it could be.

I don't see any errant shadows now from the Phaser objects!

But now, why is the one phaser going under the ship? Did you change a position of that Phaser?

Is there a lens flare at the start point of the beams which was created with a point light? was this how you created the flare there?

Are you referring to this on the ship?

Any Polygon issues in the model?

Yes you are correct, that's the shadow i was talking about. It pops up here and then.

THe lensflare is just a point, resting there, it isn't linked on the phasers.

Is the point physically touching any model geometry? Is it a Point Light or actual point geometry - like a Null object?

I'm wondering if there are any polygon errors in the model? Maybe double sided or non-planar poly's.

Could be, it's not mine. I downloaded it from kennyscrap.com.

The point is not hitting anything (pointlight).

I have seen [on occasion] where a point light that's using a Lensflare have an artifact before, but I can't recall what exactly caused it to happen. Check geometry first - triple all polygons and also check for any unmerged points in poly's using Modeler.

Maybe someone else can chime in to help as well.

Any chance of getting the scene/objects to me to try and troubleshoot? Even if it's been stripped down to not having any textures would help!!

I'm working with one phaser, and its doing good now.. I'm wondering if this isn't a fault of the gpu of the imac..
