View Full Version : Normal mapping: no NewTek generator?

Am I correct in reading the dox, that LW10.1 doesn't come with a normal map generator, that we should use Marvin Landis' or others?

What do you mean by generator? There are nodes you can generate normals with or convert bump into normals. You can bake them with the surface baking camera. Or isn't this what you mean?

Xnormal is free and bakes normal maps brilliantly...I just use that alongside LW and don't see it as an issue.

3dgfx: in the dox it strongly implies that LW can readily use normal maps, but that creating (generating) them requires outside, non-NewTek software.

Simon-S: it just seems to me that NewTek wouldn't include that facility, if indeed they didn't. That's what I'm trying to ascertain.

EDIT1: YouTubing research: bugzilla using 3rd party paint-like s/w to generate normal map.

I thought a common workflow might be to use displacement maps to distort an object, bake out a normal map, and then use a lower-rez mesh+normal map as the final mesh.

Thanks for that link.

The task I'm particularly interested in is what seems to me a very simple and common chore: taking a displaced object, baking out a displacement from within Layout as a normal map, and then (I assume) using the usual normal tools to re-apply it, probably to a much lower-rez mesh.

blytools seems, from my quick reading, to export a normal map from Modeler. I suppose I could export a SAVE TRANSFORMED from Layout and use that as the high-rez mesh in my above scenario.

FWIW, AFAICT :) , so far every tutorial and reference I've seen uses a 3rd party export, usually free, but still non-NewTek.

Thanks again.

http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/nodes/nodes/NormalCast.html#NormalCast - <-works in Layout. It even has pics to illustrate the setup.

Thanks. --again, a solution, but I'm just surprised there doesn't seem to be even a primitive functionality from NewTek.

I am pretty sure answer 2 is the answer you were looking for .. at least for most applications.

But you are right that the manual does not explain the process...
