The rig that snapped our face rings up at around $10,000, and relies on a Canon DSLR (strictly for capturing textures), a projector and a secondary camera. As you've likely picked up on, this is hardly designed for average DIYers, but these solutions are also far more detailed and flexible than using Microsoft's Kinect.

Hmm.. it handled that guy's facial hair better than mine.

There were several expensive scanning options including one that did full facial capture at 60fps from six 2k cameras. The output could be retargeted to a lower res mesh as both image/normal maps and animation without the need for markers on the face.

Yeah there's the Mova Contour system too from the people behind OnLive, which has been used on a number of films including Brad Pitt's face in Benjamin Button, that captures the fully detailed face meshes pretty much in real time as the actor says their lines. Also using no markers, instead they use glow-in-the-dark Halloween make up that's sponged onto the actors skin.

given the number of poly's you get in the iphone app for the few dollars you pay versus the tens of thousands of poly's you get for the ten grand pro one I'd say they work out the same cost wise per poly purchased

Don't have an iphone. Well I do but it's an older model that apple won't update. Hopefully the Android version of Trimentional will come sooner rather than later.
