View Full Version : LW 10.1 - Color value bug in srgb

I usually use the LW color picker, and its value are not right. (in sRGB mode)

The color value in the surface editor and windows picker is right,
but when you see it in the LW color picker, it shows the color value
with the gamma removed, (which is the color value it uses to render so it looks right in the render)

It sucks because if you enter a precise color value in the LW color picker,
then it's going to look washed out.

even with the correct color picker function turned on?

yes,
it does correct it for the window's picker but not the lw's color picker.

Actually it looks like it is correcting in the LW picker and not in the Win picker. If the picker is being color adjusted for a linear workflow the numbers will not match because you want them to match after you readjust your linear file.

So if you picked a 50% grey it would look like 50% gray but the numbers would not be 127, 127, 127. But after you open your linear file and readjust the gamma of it then the numbers would act like they had been 127,127,127 although in the rendered image they would probably be different due to lighting and shading, etc.

I think it's the LW color picker that's wrong.

for example, if you have an orange color (200,145,56) from photoshop you want to use, if you enter the value in the surface editor (under "edit nodes"), it will look right in the render.
(lightwave do the internal convertion to "147,72,10" and render it correctly in the render.)

now if you enter that same orange (200,145,56) in the LW color picker,
it will convert it to (229,199,129) then look washed out in the render.
(similar to when you have 2 times gamma22 applied to a texture.)

easier to understand with screenshots

Can you post your linear color space settings for us?

The LW color picker is broken. I reported this during the beta, but it never got fixed.

I recommend the free version of Jovian color picker: http://joviancolorpicker.com/Downloads.aspx (at bottom of page)

Thanks,
Glad to know it was a known bug ;)

The jovian color picker looks great,
but it's going to be funny to ask my company to buy a color picker
plugin.

The LW plugin version I told you to grab (Version: 1.14) is FREE. Your company doesnt need to buy anything unless you need the advanced features.

Version 2 is different, because it replaces the OS color picker, so it works in all apps.
