I want to add, that I'd pay good money for a tutorial on your workflows, clearly a lot of talent is involved, but an idea of how you go about working in Photoshop would be of massive interest to me. :D

Do you render out in layers? Or just mask stuff out in Photoshop?

thanks for all the comments guys.. really appreciate it..

general work flow is :

Model in LW, Paint a BG in PS.

Scene setup by Camera Matching Background in LW, build basic models for
floor, landscape etc to catch shadows and stuff.

Basic texturing in PS, on exported UV`s ( sometimes i skip this and paint over in PS)

Setup lighting , generally HDRI background image, Radiosity set to monte carlo minimum and then main lights normally Area Lights.

Render out , tweak , render tweak etc etc

Take full size render (Min around 3000px) into PS along with Mask for different objects as needed,

Tweak colors, Overlay textures, paint on objects, all done on different layers, flatten for final image, add sharp filter, noise and SAVE AS !!

you can see some process stuff on my website, screen shots etc..

cheers

I love the look, but the unnatural position of the arms kills it a bit.

It's certainly got a Tatooine/Mos Eisley feel to it. Great job.

RudySchneider
02-04-2013, 07:26 PM
... unnatural position of the arms ...

I had to laugh at this comment. What makes you think there is anything "natural" about an alien? I mean, not to be limited solely by what constitutes human body mechanics and physiology, perhaps the alien definition of what is considered natural differs considerably from ours.

pauland
02-05-2013, 12:56 AM
LOL, well I might agree but of eight aliens I can clearly see, seven of them have exactly the same pose.

Wow! I love your style. I really really do. Beautiful, again.

bearfoot
03-26-2013, 04:42 AM
thanks a lot guys - the scene was done in 3d using some clip maps over the geometry (same one for all just different scale etc) then lit, textured (basic) then rendered.

I then used some extra textures and painting in photoshop, there is a wireframe on my website and i will try to post the un painted (straight 3d render) soon.

cheers

Yep... not much to say apart from another gorgeous composition! Love the style soooo so much! Great process, great style... and lovely work indeed!

Great stuff Neil, I just now saw your tutorial..thanks.

I need to go through your work and workflow process.
Im currently in environment mode myself ..mostly just fiddling around, and most often with full cg stuff, so I need to
balance that with the faster blend between matte painting/2d elements & full 3d elements.

Though I prefer/wish I could work with the full cg approach to get exact lighting/godrays and shadows from clouds down to the ground and on objects etc..which is what I experiment with right now with hypervoxels and volumetric lights, I will post some notes on a thread about that later, render intensive is unavoidable.

I do however have a though behind my stuff to be fully animatable as much as possible directly inside
of lightwave..so not mere concept art.

Thanks for the inspiration Neil.

Great work as always, I like how the water flow over the whole area etc..
The textures are great, and the general mood, and cloud backdrop mixes in nicely.

I do have some dislikes about a thing, but it is merely a taste aestethic thingy...and it would be the top of the tower, not sure how you went about them in relation to how towers really look? or by
your own design etc?
I just donīt like the shape of the top of the domes, and the windows, personally I would make a more dome like style top from middle east inspiration rather then this west style of tower top, just my taste of it...but
then again, the rounder dome style top of towers is used quite extensivly.

i would say not really, i haven't ever used Soft-image unfortunately but really the tutorial isn't supposed to be Application specific its more focused on techniques. They are supposed to be
as transferable as possible between apps.

thanks for clarifying, think I'll be buying this one very soon, always loved your work and these last couple of months I've been doing concepts that rely heavily on 3Dpaintovers, so a tutorial from you on the subject is perfect !

Just wondering if I'm understanding this correctly... you have never used Soft-image ? if so, then isn't the description for the tutorial a bit weird:
"A fantastic tutorial that starts in 3D using Soft Image for the layout and then Photoshop to turn it into a Master Piece!"

Not that it matters much, since like you say, it's more on technique rather than software specifics :)

Love the craft, but not the composition.

I'm having a big problem matching the craft size to the background. It looks like a comparatively small craft - large front window, yet the background and shadow would tell us it's huge and at a distance, but I feel it's small and close.

I can't believe the image.

Love the craft, but not the composition.

I'm having a big problem matching the craft size to the background. It looks like a comparatively small craft - large front window, yet the background and shadow would tell us it's huge and at a distance, but I feel it's small and close.

I can't believe the image.

Great craft, but I agree with you, something needs probably be referenced a little more to get a better sense of what scale the craft is.

funny you guys should say that because i removed the lady pilot from the beach thinking it didnt work, when ironically i should have left her in it seems.

yeah..maybe, a floating ship in the air with no foreground object to match against or background object, that is tough, if the ship itself had some very distinguishing geometry, windows, or something that resembles life scale items as we know it, it
would have been easier.

maybe a stranded whale at the beach would be a good reference:)

the odd thing would be to make another image with that ship, with other references to humans or something we know to be true scale, then this image you have now will adjust itself to those of us already seen that other image:)
itīs like the juggernaut alien vessel in alien or prometheus, we already..(most uf us that is) know the scale of it.

Im sure you are all aware of all those sense of scale things anyway, at least all your other work is so extremly galantly portraited with all that sense of scale.

By the way...out of topic, but something I wondered about this image..
http://www.bearfootfilms.com/Environments-Cities

Isnīt the lighting a little off here? the direct sunlight hitting the cliffs seems to be coming from the left, and the direct sunlight on the ship and the clif building seem to come from the right side?
Just curious, great image anyway, of course..if it is an alien planet..it could have two suns:)

Now that is clever. The use of shadow and light to give the impression of size. Excellent.

I love it too.

The water dropping from the far ship adds tremendously to the image, making it more dynamic and giving a clear sense of scale. Also, the layers of mist adds depth to the landscape subtlety while making it visually more interesting when looking at the different detail zones. Brilliant!

They will give it stature(size).but lovely all the same.

Ah..godrays, love em, but here I show up picky again :D, could you really call volumetric light/shadow for godrays when caused by objects like a mountain, it may indeed give the appearance of size though, and you know what...you could fake cloud shadows too on the ground, that will give scale to the landscape as well, since we often subconscious recognize cloud shadows and their most common size, we rarely see a one meter cloud shadow do we? nor do we see a few centimeters of cloud shadows on the ground either.

faking cloud shadows with a transparent plane and a procedural texture would do fine, then again I am not certain that this backdrop cloud image got that type of clouds covering the sky just above the ground to give actual cloud shadows

Awesome Sci Fi concepts and fantastic environments. Are you using 2015 yet and if so are any of the new features working for you, like the edge detection for example? And do you use anything like Zbrush as well, because if not I'm amazed at the sculpted quality of the suits and terrain.

Actually Neil, I know you use LW in combination with Photoshop to get your signature look, are you using photo montage for the terrain in those last shots? It's such a pleasing blend between painting and CG it's hard to detect what was done or how it was done (which is what makes your work standout).

well thanks a lot

normally i use LW 11.6 and photoshop for paintovers and post work, also Zbrush and now Keyshot for some line / toon renders.
Some of the stuff is 2d, photo overlays and painted etc.. often the landscapes and 2d and integrated 3d elements.
