View Full Version : Does LW 10 now support after effects?

Hi,

Been using Lightwave on and off professionally for 10 years. Great renderer etc, but we are doing a lot more motion graphics work combined with after effects these days.

I am aware of the ats-3d plugins but they don't look to have been actively updated in a long time. The website site says LW7 and would they work in 9.6 and AEffects CS5?

I want to have camera animation data and object positions exported to AE. I want to know if Lightwave 10 or Core (if allowed to discuss) has now got a good working solution. I am either going to upgrade to LW10 or use the upgrade money towards purchasing Cinema 4D broadcast. If I get 4D then 9.6 will still be used, but it will mean end of line to upgrading LW in the forseeable future. I welcome any good advice. Thanks.

I'd like to see some examples of integrated AE&LW animations. Anybody?

I use LW and AE all the time with ATS plugins. Bottom line. They work. Here are examples:

http://vimeo.com/24780464
LW Camera data and item positions exported to AE and integrated with AE particles. Plasma path exported from LW to AE and augmented with AE particles. Background (mountains) generated with Horizon in AE and used exported LW camera to match motion.

http://vimeo.com/19418938
All particle and compositing work was done in AE with exported LW camera and LW item positions (like golf club, ball, etc)

http://vimeo.com/7116254
LW camera and item positions (like skateboard, hat, shoes) exported to AE.

http://vimeo.com/5413800
Tracked in syntheyes, exported to LW, animated/rendered in LW, exported camera/positions to AE, and added graphics in AE.

same as the others. Tracked in Syntheyes, all gfx done in AE, but helicopter and bridge done in LW. LW camera exported to AE so they would match

great work, monovich.

Thanks guys.

Monovich, excellent work and is the type of LW and After Effects work we are doing. Doing something now where the camera is flying though a molecule type structure in LW and 2.5d After Effects elements has to stick by these structure seamlessly in 3d space. I will buy those plugins then and test them on this job.

Hey vfxwizard, if you got a nicer solution for passing data between Lightwave and After Effects, then I am very interested. Functionality wise, pretty much what Monovich examples are showing.

vfxwizard I'd love to check your plugins as well if they are released. Transmotion does it well enough, but its not 1 click.

p.s. the two plugins I used from the entire suite are Camera Motion Baker, which of course bakes the camera to a new baked camera, and POI Cam, which exports the LW cam/nulls to an AE .jsx script (which is what you run from AE to import the data as a new Comp). Al coded a few tweaks into it at my request, so hopefully the current version has those. Specifically the ability to scale the entire export AND bake object/null positions are a must.

To get over the rotation order problems, he also coded a version where baked/exported objects each have their own "look at" null so that they are 100% properly oriented all of the time.

If you have any questions about using the plugins, let me know, and Al is also very responsive via email (which is refreshing!)

There is one other LW/AE script floating around. I saw it discussed here last year. A search may turn it up. From what I saw it isn't as full featured though but it looked interesting.

Monovich: hey, another PNW'er! Yay! Is there any LW 'community' in Portland? Seattle can't seem to make a user group fly. <|^(

Very beautiful stuff,  . Were the streamer effects pure LW??

+++++

Y'know what would be sweet? If NewTek dropped a bag of cash on Al Street and included his plugins in the 10.1 release. I wonder what a per$ua$ive amount would be?

Jeric there isn't much of a LW community in Portland that I know of. I actually just moved to Denver, so I haven't scoped it out here.

The streamer effects were HV sprites in LW (on that Nikon spot if that is what you are referring to). You can accomplish the exact same effect with the exact same techniques in AE, so sometimes I just decide based on how integrated with the 3d render they need to be. Thanks!

It would be nice if the Al Street plugins were a tad bit more integrated or brainless to udr (like in Cinema), but I'm not sure I'd want NT to buy Al out. A lot of time these developers do fine developing out on their own and if the plugins get absorbed by NT they don't get updated as much as some would like (hypervoxels, fiber FX, IK tools, etc)

"Same techniques"!!! See, I'd be using the classic "Inertia" plugin, or possibly Dpont's displacement node with a gradated weight map to do them in LW, but I have no idea how I'd do it in AE, although Video CoPilot will probably tell me.

Good point, although Worley leveraged his inclusion via Sasquatch Lite into a good marketing tool.

That is: Al's pitch could be "Yeah, those included plugins are nice and all, but a little dated: you should use what I have now, for this incredibly reasonable fee!" :D

And $25 for the current AE><LW TMUP (http://www.ats-3d.com/#TransMotion%20Utilities%20%20Pack) seems very reasonable.
