View Full Version : Animated Booleans in LW10?

Does anyone know if LW10 is able to do animated booleans like in 3DSMAX? I was a Max user for years until I joined the Light side of the Force. In max it was possible. So I figured LW could do it to. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me figure out how or if. Can anyone one help?

I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Not natively. You can use animated clip maps but they will leave a shell not a booleaned object. You can also try dpont's boolean shader node: http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/nodes/Additionnal_Nodes_2.html

Will his DPKit work with LW10? Otherwise it looks promising.

I'm not sure if it's 64bit but it might be. There have been a bunch of updates on his plugins lately. Best way is to test to see if it will open for you... (I'm running on a Mac anyway)

Oh I see. Okay. I guess it's back to experimentation. Thanks bro for your help.

No problem. If you have any problems just post here. I haven't used the node really but I'm sure someone will chime in! good luck!

of course it works. It's a dpont plugin ;)

It works mostly. Of course I used it in a very complex setup so I ran into some funny issues. One of which was that I could only get it to work with the classic camera. I don't know if or when he will look into the issue. I was able to work around the issues I had and completed the job. When it goes up on the web I'll post a link.

I tried playing around with the node setup that is shown in the video a while ago and I was able to reproduce the intersection of two balls as he shows. But I was not able to get it to work reliably in other situations. Slight changes in the node setup, size of objects or size of the render would cause the boolean intersection to fail to draw properly.

I have been able to get animated booleans to work by using clip maps:

Its a bit tedious to render the clip maps but it does work reliably I think.

This is an example of what shift boolean plugin can do. Surface of intersecting surface becomes cut surface.

Here is a test scene movie

and another

shiftbooltest2.mov (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13098777/shiftbooltest2.mov)

here is a scene

You'll need the plugin here

Shift_BooleanTexture.htm (http://erikalstad.com/Thank_You_Shift/Shift_BooleanTexture.htm)

and it is only 32 bit - but works in VPR which is cool

Hope this helps
