I loaded some of the scenes that come with lightwave 10 and they were really good looking scenes however when I move some of the rig bones I notice the viewport performance is very slow I tried lowering the subdivision value by selecting the object then hit P, the viewport became faster.

my question is are these models really intended to be in this state [very high subd] when adding kyes for animation?

My graphics card is Radeon HD 6870

Usually when animating you use a lower subdivision of objects to get faster feedback.
You may have to go higher when you for example are testing things like displacement maps coming from zbrush, or testing deformations when rigging.

10.1 that will be coming out soon has multi-threaded mesh deformations. Helpful, provided of course you have a mult-core system (does anyone not these days?)
