View Full Version : best way to put a image map on moon sphere

Without going to UV's, what is the best way to put a moon texture on a sphere? The sphere which is the moon will be stationary, I only want to show one side, the side we see every night? Do I just make a flat disk or a round sphere. I tried to put a moon texture on the moon, but it does not look right?

You could probably get away with using a flat plane or disc if you don't need the shading to change on it or you aren't flying around it. You could just do a standard planar projection.

You could use a sphere with a planar projection and if the image looks stretched, you could stretch the sphere to flatten it out.

If you don't want the scene lighting to effect it, you'll want to set diffuse to 0% and luminosity to 100% in it's surface settings.

It all depends on how you're using it in your shot.

Yes, I will go with the flat plane, thanks dwburman.

They have a free moon (and Earth) texture here that you can map to a sphere:
