This shows AMD over Intel for a long shot!!

Well I wouldn't call it a longshot but yes the AMD64 FX 51 appears faster than the P4EE by a few seconds. The sad part is the 32 bit version of the 3200 XP beats the 64 bit version by almost 10 seconds. :(

Also the FX and 3200 64 bit processors only work as a single processor machines. No duals unless you move up to Opteron.

I would like to see if a 64 bit OS and a 64 bit LW make any difference.

Cheers,
JS

AMD's x86-64 platform brings other enhancements that don't exist in IA32 (plain old 32-bit Wintel). These enhancements, combined with an OS that is optimized for AMD, would make the AMD processors run much faster in 64-bit mode than they do in 32-bit mode.

Well just moving from 32 to 64 won't necessarily make anything go much faster. If LW is made into a 64 bit program I would expect that to have more impact on the speed than simply going from a 32 bit to 64 bit OS.

FYI.

Quoted from The State and History of Previsualization on the Star Wars Prequels (http://vfxworld.com/?sa=adv&code=319b255d&atype=articles&id=1878&page=3)

"One example of pushing the limits is our move to a 64-bit architecture done in partnership with AMD. The effects industry has been bouncing off the upper ceiling of what today’s 32-bit hardware can process for some time now.

Not only is this 64-bit technology able to accommodate 32-bit legacy, applications, but it is also able to leverage 64-bit applications when they become available. A markedly improved internal architecture, meanwhile, complements the chip. Using early systems, we have seen a dramatic increase in productivity using AMD Opteron-based hardware even when running 32-bit applications and operating systems. Some of the tests we’ve run have improvements to the tune of double the performance, especially with heavy file texture-based rendering. This is an incredible boon to our process and gives us a great new tool to do more with less. We’re looking forward to moving ahead with this and other new technologies because it strips away a few of the technical issues and allows us to simply create more effectively. "

Well Lucas and Co have been using SGI for years so they have had 64 bit for a long time.

If you look carefull you can see the athlon Xp 2700+ and 2800+ running faster than other P4 Systems...That´s the interesting point here.

Yes, very interesting as Tom hardware themselves showed them as inferior to the P4's just a couple of month ago.

I thought everyone knew you could count on Tom's hardware for skewing results based on who's paying for their advertising?

I heard that the Win 64 for AMD works perfect and is very stable and gives a powerful performance increase in graphics/gaming.

Also another rumor that Boxx is going to be releaseing a Gaming machine that will be perfect for the casual gamer as well give the ability for the extreme gamers to Mod it. Just watch the press releases the next couple of weeks.

*Edit I forgot to add why does it a new thread on this AMD-64 vs Intel seem to arise every few days?

no, it's not right, it's left... read what it says, smaller is better. The ones with ratings further to the right are worse than those to the left :p
