View Full Version : Meet Mystic!

The artists at Applehead Factory had less then 48 hours to transform a horse into Mystic the Unicorn using LightWave 3D v10.

The horse was filmed with no tracking markers, a soft focus and the camera was not locked, which made it a challenge to place the horn on the horses head. LightWave Modeler was used to create the Horse Proxy head and Unicorn horn. A rig was setup in LightWave Layout giving the artists at Applehead multiple controls to aid in matching the live action horses movement.

The background plates were loaded into LightWave Layout for each of the 5 shots and hand tracked frame by frame. The horse proxy mesh was hidden from the final renders and the Horn was textured and lit to match the background plates. The final renders were then passed on to the client for final compositing.

I thought some of you might like to see some of the work in progress images for the project. These two images show the raw model and the rig we built for the artists to track each shot with. The horses head was just used as a proxy to make it easier to match the live plates.

here is a screen grab showing one of the shots being matched with the proxy rig.

This was a test render before we did the final renders that were sent to the compositor.

Wow so it's like he "painted" each frame?
I can't understand the horn material, is it translucent?
