Not me, I'm going with my family to France/Spain. I'm attending SIGGRAPH since 1997, so I'm going to miss the show. BTW, this time the Canadian visa is a real issue.

BTW, this time the Canadian visa is a real issue.Sadly, that's true for travelers from Mexico as far as I know. there was some sort of crack down last year. From the US, about all anyone should need is a passport.

Titus

Yeah, it seems they discovered that Mexican inmigrants abused some loopholes in the refugee inmigration laws. While I usually plan my SIGGRAPH trip with months in advance, since my friend is going and he has already the hotel room, a last minute trip was a nice option.

Drink some beer (or whatever canuks like) in my honor.

Drink some beer (or whatever canuks like) in my honor.I do not expect to go myself (pity, it's my favorite show and I have a brother to stay with in Vancouver), but yes, Canadians have been known to occasionally quaff the odd beer (only on special occasions mind you ... such as days ending in "y").

mikala
06-15-2011, 03:37 PM
Sorry to hear that.
I'll hoist a vodka in your name.
It's being held in a really great venue guys. Pretty much a brand new facility on the harbour front.

Philbert

I'm hoping to see lots of pics here on the forums.

mikala

Well from outside the show no problem.
From the literature they have a no "camera policy" inside.
Was hoping to get some footage with my EX3....:(

Philbert
06-15-2011, 03:48 PM
That's true, though there are always a ton of pics from inside regardless of the policy. :p

Not that I would encourage that sort of behavior.

You cannot take photos/video inside the conference while there's a speaker... speaking. At the show floor or the rest of the venue there is no problem. However from time to time you can met some student volunteer triyng to enforce his new little power.

Then what is this?
From their latest pdf.....

Camera and Recording Policies
No cameras or recording devices are permitted at SIGGRAPH
2011. Abuse of this policy will result in the loss of the individualís
registration credentials.
SIGGRAPH 2011 uses an official conference photographer
and reserves the right to use all images that this photographer
takes during the conference for publication and promotion of
future ACM SIGGRAPH events.

They don't have SBowie enforcing ruthlessly their policy :). There are plenty of images of the conference taken for the attandees:

SBowie are you getting a bit of a reputation?

Titus

I've attended SIG as media, they give you a special permission to take photos during the sessions. But now with a camera in every phone people is taking photos all the time.

mikala
06-15-2011, 04:36 PM
I'm wondering who I'd contact to get a media pass from.
I'm just wanting to nab some stuff from the Exhibition Floor. The whole "vibe" kind of thing. Nothing revealing :)

No tie though (I like a sports jacket for trade shows - gives me pockets to stuff swag into, and lets me cover my badge when that's useful)

So what be in the usual haul of the swag perchance?

SBowie

So what be in the usual haul of the swag perchance?I'd have to say that my Wacom Intuos III was the best thing I even bagged, but over the years I've snagged stuff that ran to as much as a grand. Usually it's a lot more trivial though. One thing that I get a lot of mileage out of is a mini-mouse I take on trips with my laptop. All sorts of odds and sods...

mikala
06-15-2011, 07:14 PM
Whoa nice!
To be honest though I just want to see all the stuff on display from all the companies.

Hopefully it will be bigger than the LA siggraph for you. The size of the floor between 2004 and 2010 was quite different. 2004 was a much bigger exhibit.

Hopefully they will be using the big rooms although I think all the rooms in this Convention/Conference hall are huge.
