A couple of services have been added for the LightWave community.

IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
-------------------------------

A chat area has been added for general Lightwave discussion,
LScript and plug-in Help and talk about Lightwace 3D in relation
to game development.

Here's how to get there:

Download mIRC from http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Install it.
Start it up and connect to the server named ETG ("Enter The Game")
If the Join Popup doesn't display select "Commands" -> "Join Channel" from the pull-down menus and enter #LW3D.
Enjoy!
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
---------------------------------

If you're familiar FTP internet storage areas one has been added
for your use free of charge. Use it to share textures, rendered
pics, opjects, LScripts, and/or tutorials etc. - Anything Original or
that you have permission to distribute (LW related).

Here's one way to use it:

Click http://www.smartftp.com/get/SFTPSetup.exe and select "Open" not "Save".
Follow the installation instructions that follow.
Start it up and enter 61.213.194.19 in the address entry area at top.
Check the "Anonymous" checkbox and click on the connect Icon.
Navigate to the "Upload" folder.
Upload a .bat file to create your subfloder structure or if you're
unfamiliar with bat files you may simply upload a text file in
plain english explaining what folders you would like to create
This process can also be used for maintaince later on if you wish
to delete, move or rename previously created files and folders.
Note:
It's a good idea to keep your subfolder structure organized
with the use of sensical folder and file names. A good
example folder structure might be:

|-Upload
| |
| |-YourUserName
| | |
| | |-BitMaps
| | | |-Renders
| | | |-Textures
| | | |-Reference_Photos
| | | |-Screen_Shots
| | | |-Etc
| | |
| | |-Objects_And_Scenes
| | | |-Project_01
| | | |-Project_02
| | | |-Project_03
| | | |-Etc
| | |
| | |-Tutorials_And_Tips
| | | |-Human_Head
| | | |-HyperVoxel_SpaceClouds
| | | |-Etc
| | |
| | |-Etc
| |
|

or something similar. It doesn't have to follow this exact
format. You can just use your common sense. Please do
make sure that you use only one "UserName" folder and
only use your own.

Once your folders and files are in place you may post links
to them in EMails, on Web Pages, or in News Groups such
as:

---> FTP://61.213.194.19/Upload/Tesselator/Bitmaps/Artsy/Lights.JPG

--
That's it. Please enjoy these services and restrict it to legitimate
Lightwave related usage! Please take some time to read the
docs of the mIRC and SmartFTP programs that you downloaded
here if you followed the steps above. For mIRC help you can
type "/help" after connecting.

Hey cool thing that ftp !
Are there some size limitation ?

Tesselator
10-06-2003, 01:00 AM
Thank you for your kind comments.

Currently there are a only (:D) few terrabytes allocated to FTP storage. So far, in my expirience, people in the USA and UK max out at about 15k/sec. There can usually be about 30 people on at that speed before thing start to clog. Anyway at 15K/sec or 20K/sec. really large files (larger than 20 or 30 megs) aren't really feasible.

Thank you,

Is the IRC server experiencing down time?

I ask because maybe it is my end?
I'm trying to avoid installing the 30-day mIRC.
I'm - for the first time - trying to use my Trillian client to connect
to #LW3D in EnterTheGame, USA
and it keeps telling me "couldn't resolve Hostname."

Trillian users?
Or did I simply catch #LW3D at a bad time?

Thank you for any help.

Tesselator
10-06-2003, 11:01 AM
Hi Bones,

Ummm, ya go ahead anf get the mIRC. It "says" 30 days... and
indeed there is a moral obligation to at least intend to register
after that time. But it doesn't stop working after 30 days if you
decide to continue using it. mIRC in it's default configuration
will try every server on the network till it finds one that is up.
And automaticall reconnects if dropped in the same way. So
that's one reason I recommended mIRC.

Trillian I've never used so I can't say. Many people say how
great it is so I'm sure there something to that. I think Trillian
can use mIRC somehow though if you want to use Trillian.

The way IRC seems to work the #LW3D "channel" is carried
on (by) many different "servers" that combined form the
"network" called ETG (irc.enterthegame.*). Servers go down
sometimes but maybe never the entire network (many servers)
and therefore the channel will always be up. Since it's a game
network for players, clans, and developers there will be times
maybe once or twice a year, when several games release at the
same time that the whole network will get bogged down for a
few hours.

Anyway, more than likely it's on your end. Just go for the mIRC
and it'll become easy. I like easy. Easy: good!

Thank you,
Tesselator

Tess,

I'm going to be on the road for the next 3 weeks. Then 1 month of post production, then 14 days holiday.

So browsing will be limited to the newsgroup and forums I'm afraid. When I get back I promise I'll get into that IRC channel.

If ever someone's around in the Dominican Republic first 14 days of december, drop me a line and we might get together and chat some LW.

Tesselator
10-07-2003, 01:38 AM
Wow!

Awesome! Three weeks of fun then good times for a month and
then you get to KBMO for fourteen days? Whatta life! Wanna
trade? Just for like the next 9 weeks??? :D

Guess not huh? Well take some pics for all us nine to fivers!

Where's your road trip taking ya? Or is it one of those ridding
wild on the highways destinationless and free things?

you're the lucky one. You get to teach and play with LW all day.
I have to juggle balls all day. I have to take notes about lighting and reflections. I have to remember the script (yes, I'm an actor too). I have to speak to the cameraman and make sure I get good matte's and all that on location !!!

MIKE:
yea u couple of my friends and me are running EFNET #lightwavers since december 1997 .... damn lotza years passed..........
u were there few times but didn'T see ya in there for long time...... :) stop by our solar system sometime and have a beer:)

Tesselator
10-07-2003, 01:35 PM
Perhaps I should mention here that the two areas are not in competition.

The subject matter discussed in the two areas is very different.
#lightwares as the name implies seems to be more of a lounge
area where topics ane anything humanly imaginable. I actually
haven't seen LW being discussed at all in 6 days of 24 hour
monitoring. This is not a bad thing. Not at all! Like Mav says:
Stop by sometime and have a beer. I like it in there myself...
well mostly :O #LW3D on the other hand is pretty topical and
so far has covered:

- How to make a for next loop in L-Script,
- How to change the colors of the fonts and GUI elements of lightwave,
- Green Screen matte techniques, examples, and results,
- Game modeling for car game (Flatout),
- Game modeling for FPS (xbuster),
- Ways to tackle the task of learning modeler,
- The dread of globar veribles (programming),
- Particle systems internal and 3rd party,
- Compositing every which way,
- Automated Revision Control Systems (RCS) for developers,
- Debugging utilities and walking each other through the actual steps of using them,
- Everyone's current project (about 5 artists),
- Job hunting for game 3D work,
- More 3D LW/Game Dev. support apps than I knew existed,
- Camera tracking the mechanical way,
- Camera Tracking the software way,
- How to Tripple a quad mesh [T],
- About 10 ways of working with DV as an aquisition media for LW comps,
- The future of NeTek as an entity,
- Best 3D application and environment for game dev.,
- etc.

Well that was yesterday and today. This list would be unbearably
long if I included all the LW related topics covered in the nine
whole days it's been registered. :D So if you're into IRC don't
think of it as either-or competeing channels, but rather two
rooms in the same house. A nice living room and a connected
office. :D Oh cool! They just started talking about LW in the
living room... I think I'll tune in and see what I can pick up!

See you there! ETG #LW3D and EFNET #lightwavers...

By the way... So far I've found not just 2 but 19
with "Lightwave" or "LW" in thier names.

The FTP seems real flakey. I tried using FlashFXP and IE, both of which the FTP site says the anonymous password fails after I entered an email account as the "password" numerous times. Some how IE let me in by clicking on ftp://61.213.194.19/Upload/Tesselator/Bitmaps/Artsy/Lights.JPG

and going backwards through the ftp.

Tesselator

Right. Yup. Exactly!

As you've discovered IE is the absolute worst app for connecting
and proforming operations in FTP space but reads linked files
without any trouble. This is the reason I chose to walk potential
new users through the SmartFTP download and install. SmartFTP
probably isn't the best either... it seems to choke if you add more
that 20,000 files to the download que... But I know it fairly well
(so can help if needed) and it offers lots of convienient options
for advanced users and beginners.
So, use the SmartFTP to do your work creating folder hierarchies,
uploading LW related content, transversing the user folders and
looking around. And trust that when you post a link to your work
that 99.8% of the readers will be able to click/right-click and check
it out.

Sorry about the IE expirience there bro...

teles: well yea since we are running for really long time it is not common that u don't see INTENSIVE talk on lw there.... there is usually same ppl comming in and out we know eachother for long time and we excange lw knowledge from time to time but usually it is not that ofthen like in begining of #lightwavers where all was new...... today only newbie users that stop by ask for help and our guys shear knowledge. so don't be sad if u'll not get that much of intensive lw talk......... sometime every1 of us need off LW topic talk and that is good! anyway nice to see lw community grow day by day!
see ya !

Also, I was toying with the idea of channel linking some of the
cooler channels. I of course have no idea what I'm doing...

For those of you wanting to Delete files from your FTP user folder
at FTP://61.213.194.19 Just upload a textfile with the filesnames,
the intended action (delete or whatever), and contact info.
Contact info is optional and .bat files will do as well.

Thanks,

Ya, :( the render-room is no more. All but a couple of the
twentyfour DELL 410 that were in there have been sold or
given away. The good news is that they've been replaced
with 4 DELL 450s and 2 DELL 650s which btw, fit nicely across
a single desktop. So I guess it's a good thing in a way. Less
power consumption and an extra room for the kids to mess up.
The thing I'll miss most are the cool Quake LAN parties I often
hosted and students dropping by at any hour to log in some
extra LW time. O-Well... I'll be converting the CD shop into
an internet cafe soon so I guess that can fill the void.

Yep, that's been the whole and short of it for the last five
years or more. Lukily for me the CD shop pretty much runs itslef.
See that girl next to me by the yellow couch? Manager/Savior
and Music expert! :)

OK so what do you do in your spare time. :D

Spare time??? Heh! But I'm just the nerd that thinks it's fun
to bring my wireless (ISDN) notbook everywhere I go and VNC
into my home server and chat on IRC, read newsgroups, and watch
renders with every in-between moment of the day. It's like
having pocket pals. :D Ofcourse my ISP bill is astronomical but
hey, It's not my money. ;)

These are just people that have uploaded AND tagged the
system in only the last month. There are many more but just an
upload OR a tag was made in the other cases.

These are all confirmed pirates you can pretty much multiply
this list by the number of months this has been up here in
the discussion forum (ie. x2.5). I'm not really complaining just
looking for ideas or comments.

I suppose I could make users get a log-on name and password
but that seems like such a bother. Anyone know a better way?

Tess, do the username/password thing, by all means. You 're such a net freak ;) that it's easy for any of us to contact you and get an account for your ftp, and it will only need to be done once for each of us. You could even make a message appearing when trying to log on anonymously (with NO upload/download/whatever rights) with a short explanation and your email.
By the way, thanks for that great service to the community :)

Thanks Nixx!

I didn't quite go with passwords. Just disabled the ability
to create new folders interactively online. The new way
to name & manage folders and files is by text request or a
.BAT file uploaded to the FTP. It's kinda too bad this has
to be like this. O-Well, anyway, here's what the new FTP
online readme files says:
NEW FTP Policy -=*> Please Read <*=-
------------------------------------

1. Anonymous FTP users may no longer
create folders interactively. See
below for explanation.

2. Anonymous FTP users can maintain
and create folder and folder sub-
structures, delete and rename
files and folders via uploaded
Batch (.bat) files. See guide
below.

Guide (Simple Dos)
------------------
In order to maintain or create new
user folders and substructures you
are required to upload a .bat which
I will execute locally. Valid
commands will be simple DOS state-
mints such as:

MKDIR Folder/Subfolder/FName
RMDIR Foldername
REN Foldername or FileName
DEL Filename
MOVE Filename to Dest
CD Foldername

Etcetera... For a more complete list
of commands select "Run" from the
start menu and enter CMD. This will
open a DOS Shell where you can type
"HELP" for a list of commands or
also "HELP [commandName]" for the
various syntax and options of any
particular command such as:

HELP MKDIR
HELP MOVE
etc.

Don't be intimidated by the possible
complexity of these commands. In
their simple form they are really
quite straight-forward. Below is
an example script for one possible
folder structure creation and upload
session:

Upload BobsRender.jpg -> Upload/
Upload BobsMovie.avi -> Upload/
Upload BobsNewAccount.bat -> Upload/

Contents of BobsNewAccount.bat:
MKDIR Bob\Images\Renders
CD Bob
MKDIR Images\Textures
MKDIR Objects
MKDIR Anims
MOVE \BobsRender.jpg Bob\Images\Renders
MOVE \BobsMovie.avi Bob\Anims

Or just simply .bat create the folders
and then upload the files at a later
date. Usually your batch files will
be executed within 24hrs. or less.
An example of a maintenance where Bob
had 20 jpeg files and 5 avi animations
all in his personal root folder might
be:

Upload Maint.bat -> Upload/Bob/

Contents of Maint.bat:
MKDIR Pics
MKDIR Anims
MOVE *.avi Anims
Move *.jpg Pics

That's it. Pretty simple actually.
If you would rather you may also
upload a plain English text file
requesting the folder creations
and/or maintenance operations.

Explanation
------------

Hmmm, well there seems to a bunch
of pirates out there that want to
use and misuse other peoples re-
sources (like this ftp site). They
don't want to or can't use their
own equipment for this I guess so
have to try and invade that of
others. The typical pattern was
to upload a file called 100k,
500k, or 1mbtest and then download
the same file (as a speed test 1st
I guess) then to try and create a
very deep folder substructure
that was supposed to be erogenous
enough to be unelectable. It was
however easy to kill <shrug>. The
next step in the process was to
upload pirate wArEz to the folder.
As an indication of lameness of
these twirps the usual uploads were
incomplete RARs of movies like
Fight Club or even older (c) films
and half cracks of LW ver. 6.0 and
etc.
So this is the reason for the new
policy in creating original dirs.
