View Full Version : LWO quicklook generator for LWO request

some mac users requested this already long time ago, but as posted in this thread (http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118686) i'd like to push this again:

it would be very cool to see a developer (or much better: newtek!) coding a simple quicklook generator plugin for LWO files. OSX can already see other 3d formats like collada (natively) or cinema 4d and shade, as well as CAD files like nemetschek vectorworks as preview thumbnails, so it shouldn't be too hard to code this as well for LWO...?

as for a list of existing OSX quicklook generators, look (!) here http://www.quicklookplugins.com/ and here http://www.qlplugins.com/. the QL technology isn't dead, as OSX lion will for example incorporate QL for website URL's...

'twould be very nice. +1.

Next steps?

LWO should be perhaps pushed as an open format .. with a few uv improvements, it can support point, line (kinda), spline, poly and 'metanurbs' data, as well as morphs etc.

Ngons as well.

OBJ may handle uvs better, but otherwise limited in most of those categories ..

(even if NT still plans for a unified format some time in the future, all the more reason to 'open' LWO and give it to the public ...)

Just need to add clipmaps! ;)

Great idea! I second the motion.

So is this thumbnail generation created by the script when you hit spacebar for Quicklook or does Lightwave use the script to generate thumbs as you save, the Adobe products can all use Quicklook efficiently because they them selves generate thumbs that can be viewed, this gives rise to the problem that 3D objects have no set viewing angle, so would it always default to the 'Back' projection (looking towards +Z) or would it just be arbitrary

I don't know much about the QuickLook system, but OSX natively supports Collada files already. Granted, support is spotty at best - half the files don't show up correctly, but 3D support seems certainly possible.

Rendered previews from Modeler would obviously be a lot better though. :D It'd require a modification to the .lwo file format though, wouldn't it? To include image previews?

probably it's even possible to code a plugin which independently from the OS calculates a preview as icon for each saved LWO model? but the quicklook generator should be able to show the model in a simple rendered mode, with an option to rotate it with the mouse when previewing.
