I've often thought I should do this:

Certain effects take forever to render, but it'd be nice to see what the heck they look like, just in case, and to get a handle on what works and what doesn't.

Specifically, today, I'm thinking about Volumetric Lights. Some of the presets look really intriguing, but it's hard to know what they'd look like in motion.

So, I'm making up a quick list of LWS's and queuing them up in SN to render. So, finally my machines will be doing something valuable while I sleep. I'm just going to start with the presets that ship with LightWave, and will move onto original stuff when I get a handle on them.

Volumetric lights would be really cool for engine exhausts and such, but due to their huge PITA factor, I think you'd almost always want to render them out and map them onto polygons, rather than fighting to get them to work native to a scene. By doing it while you sleep, you could build up a library of cool effects to have on hand.

Cool idea!
Will you register the rendering time? And will you present the outcome somewhere?

Well, I start and stop the renders, so that's difficult. I posted one already (search "volumetric").

Anyway, EVERYBODY can do this, and hey, use the files I posted and they'll all be comparable!!!

I hadn' even noticed there were vlights presets...

Yeah, that's why chatter is so important. Half the time, what you learn is not even the point of the discussion! :)

There's a surprising number of presets, cruise the folder to see 'em.

BTW, they render quite fine in VPR...
