Hi,
Im not very familiar with rigging/IK/etc.
Now I need to rig a multi piston rig. (see attachment)

Im wondering if someone knows good tutorials or has some tips and tricks one could share.

Question : should all moving parts be on their own layers or should I use weight maps on them?

Using weight maps requires that you use bones.

If you don't have a lot of separate parts object layers is fine. If you have a lot of parts then having a single mesh with bones is an option as that makes it very easy to update the model. You only need to swap out the single mesh file versus a bunch of individual parts.
