If I bring in a zbruch Obj into lightwave, is there a place I can go to reduce the polycount, as some of the zbrush models are laden with polygons? I have 12 gigs of RAM, but still will probably overwhelm my computer if I start to add more object in a scene with it?

You should be exporting the low poly version from ZB, with the displacement or normal map you create there. Or, use decimation master in Zbrush to reduce the poly first - depends what you want to do with the object.

Have a read through this stuff http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/ZBrush_to_Lightwave

It's not about ruducing the polys. In Zbrush, you should have multiple levels. At the lowest level you have a mesh that LW can handle easily, and the highest has all the sculpted detial. What displacement maps allow is for you to have lower geometrymesh, and still have all the detial rendered.
