When I move and key a character to bend down to pick up a ball from frame zero to frame 45 and then I parent a bone on the hand so that the ball stays with the hand. It works fine to the last frame 60, but when I move the time line to frame zero, the ball goes haywire, I want the ball to stay put from frame zero to frame 45 and only move with the hand from 45 to frame 60. I am using auto key.

Then you can't simply use Parent because it's not keyframable. You need something more dynamic. Parenter would be a good choice in the Ball's motion options, as would Same As Item in the Controllers and Limits tab (you need to set an envelope for it to be dynamic).

Yep that video is by far an awesome way to key parenting. It works great!

Do you have to use nulls for this to work, or can you use the objects in layout without nulls?

i'm quite sure you can use any object...

Yes any object will work, back when I was in school we used Parenter to change parents of a Frisbee so it went from a characters hand, to nothing, then to a dog's mouth who caught it.
