Just wondering if it's pretty easy to connect two computers for a render. I have a macbook pro i5 and really serious about getting a high performance IMac. I've never had a render farm so I'm not sure what I need or if I need to just connect both computers to a firewire cable. Does it cost more money to have LW run with a render farm?

More money in that you are paying for power for more computers.

Not sure about the firewire thing, I only did that once connecting two Mac's to transfer files over. Normally you would use a hub.

Screamernet is free and there are step by step tutes in that section. It might take a couple of days to work out the kinks. But once you have it up and running and understand what is going on it is not that bad.

You can also choose to buy a render manager with a nice GUI interface.

Good Luck

Oh...and this isn't strictly legit, but before I could get my systems networked (they were in different buildings) I used to start LW. Then start the render 1-x step 1. Then remove the dongle and go to the other building and use the dongle to start LW and start the render x-1 step -1.
That way the two machines would meet in the middle. Then I would have to sneaker net the files over on a firewire drive.

You won't get faster rendering times per frame, but you'll be rendering two separate frames at the same time so animations finish rendering sooner.

You can also use the -3 tag for lwsn to render a scene without loading layout... but instead of dealing with that you can use DLI SNUB Launcher Lite to set it up quickly and easily. http://www.dreamlight.com/webshop/utilities/snublauncher.html

Actually, there's a small app named Easy sets up single computer screamernet renders for you. http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72753
