View Full Version : New Tutorial: Bullet Holes in a Metal Door Part One

03-05-2011, 03:15 PM

I'm pleased to announce that my latest tutorial is now available at Liberty3D.com (http://www.liberty3d.com/citizens/d-w-burman/danas-videos/digital-bullet-hits-making-holes-in-a-metal-door-part-one/)!

This project-based tutorial (Lightwave 9 and Above) covers:

Image sequences and the Image Editor
Making and using a gapped image sequence
Texturing in the Node Editor
How Lightwave uses displacement maps
Displacements in the Object Properties panel
Displacements in the Surface Texture Node Editor
Simple subdivision and polygonal modeling

I even included a bonus video that shows how to make a bullet hole Photoshop brush that will probably work better than the one I used in the tutorial.

Check out the preview video (http://youtu.be/elzrEXAQsPI) for a look at the final product and sneak peek at the journey to get there.

What is in part 2? Are the bullet holes through and through?

Part two will be adding some partigon sparks, HV sprite smoke, a comparison between the two, the interior of the hangar (very simple geometry and another photo), and a few variations on the scene (inside the door in the dark, and outside with door being dented with no holes).

I have it recorded, but there might be too much experimentation in the video so I'm not sure if I'll tighten it up in editing, rerecord part of it or just leave it as is and put the final settings in the PDF.
