Hi, many aplications support MIDI control.

Lightwave have kind of work sometimes with some Midi control scripts but nothing solid.
On Walen.se, we could get game controlers support to control lightwave channels, but it didn't work that well for me.

Now, with Android devices and Tablets, we can go further.
They are real control surfaces. Some Nuke controls are developped on Ipad.

It would be awesome if we could get something like that to control character face rigs for example!

I have downloaded a Midi controller and the XY pads or the sliders make me want to control my character's faces.


If any developper is interested in doing something, I would be more than happy to contribute. Come on, it would be awesome to have that!!!!

But midi control would really need the LW sliders to be revisited .. this is whee the true power becomes really obvious ..

Off the top of my head:
- Mixing multiple textures and blend nodes in realtime, with VPR (!)
- (Potentially) Being able to edit the keys in realtime (scrubbing through the animation at full or fraction speed) would also be amazing.

16 channels of 128 buttons that respond to how hard you press them.
127 standardised controlchange numbers.
very inexpensive, easily available hardware and software.
massive user base.
20+ Years and still going, with no driver issues or updates.

Most, If not all musicians have a hardware device that can send out Midi information. Most FX boxes, even amps!
Two leads. Midi-In and Midi-Out. One talks(Midi out), the other listens(Midi In. ie. LW.)
Plug the "out" into the "in" and ..errr, you don't need the second lead.:thumbsup:

Sounds rubbish!! Who'd want that ?!! :D

Did I mention footpedals ? We could have FOOT-Pedals.!! Dagnammit!!

Why is that? Of course I made a shortcut.
I wanted to say that I tried some othe solutions like using a controller (essentially o use with your great Vehicle rigging plugin) and it didn't really work out. Maybe wrong controller, maybe bugs, I don't know.
I didn't mean that your plugin isn't working.

It's also limited as well as physical midi controllers to a certain amount of physical buttons.

Midi virtual controllers don't get those limits.
Multitouch can also be useful.
We could jump from texture control to object, morph control, muscles, IK/FK, or even go further and control trackbar.
If at least we can control a null's position, it would be awesome.

Imagine yourself being able to map your fingers on controls that make your character react accordingly. Live motion capture for hands.

It will be awesome. Just imagine a 16 knobs and 16 faders assigned to diffrent parameters in Graph editor or faders used in modeler on bendsaw or in gradient editor combined with knobs. Dont even mention a morph mixer and motorized faders :-)

MIDI has many uses. Keyboards with weighted keys? Sure. Triggers? Great.
Personally, I have kind of wanted physical faders to control virtual sliders.

Something like this. And for any who may not be familiar with interfaces like this, there is a "bank" function which works kind of like a "page" function. By hitting "Bank" you control 8 more channels, then the next 8, etc. And if the software spoke to the interface so when you selected an object (or bone I suppose) it would update the bank info...seems pretty intuitive.

Rhino and Grasshopper (it's new nodal scripting environment) have some cool plugins some people have been developing:


Though the midi part still requires some coding. They hope to have a full midi solution soon, tho.

Now with VPR & half decent open GL previews. More interactive control is a must. I need to make sure that I dont loose my fine motor skills prematurely due to too much mousing.

I will pay a developer to work on an OSC or midi input plugin for lightwave. OSC has higher resolution. DMX has 256 steps so also better than midi which only has 127 steps.

3ds Max has had this function since the 90s. Applications are time-scrub function. Motion capture and interactive control for rigs just like the LW slider plugin. WYSIWYG is a real time volumetric renderer that responds to DMX, used in the lighting industry. Lightwave has been around for so long, I used to mock up scenes for lighting designers using lightwave. now they do it quicker themselves! They are now programming whole shows without ever going to the gig! Unity has great performance in this area too, and midi and OSC has been implemented in that program for additional control options.

Has anyone tried the Midi2lW plugin. If this can't be used to control Modify>Sliders, then its a useful job to get done.

Hey guys!
I'm doing 3d realtime visual show with Xnth (www.xnth.eu) Xnth support midi, so i can use any software or usb controller that can send midi signal to control Xnth. I wish Lightwave could do that too. I will give a try to midi2lw ...

look at what they have for Cinema 4D, OSC controller for C4D

Have you seen Pure Data ? I managed to get my midi-only LPD8 to output OSC ...

Latest update .. I got my midi devices working in Rhino (via Grasshopper and plugin GHowl) - see attached.

I am curious if we can go via the new controler interface - if LW can talk to a Sony Move, OSC should be childsplay ...

I want Touch OSC (http://hexler.net/software/touchosc) connected to my LW ... (!)

I just wanted to bump this thread which pretty much says it all after the awesome virtual studio tools demo at siggraph. Midi would really open up a lot of possibilities. It works really well for virtual puppeteering in softimage and motionbuilder. Midi joysicks are especially useful.... I want to use my custom doepfer usb64 midi animation controller in light wave. ( I went a little overboard on the joysticks)

Tons of iPad apps too. Jazz mutant lemur has built in physics... It's nice.

Midi is crucial, but OSC control of course would be awesome too and I haven't heard of anyone adding that to a 3d software yet.

I really think it would be worth it for newtek to implement this... Let's hope a third party does at least. i would gladly pay for it.

Check out the free application GlovePIE -
it supports MIDI and could probably hook up to Layout's Virtual Studio easily enough - I havent tried it w LW yet - but I have with Unity and it's great - that would be the easiest/first thing I would try before working on a MIDI plugin...
