Give your best guess, how long do you think Ptex could be the next standard, "eradicating" UV maps.

1 year? 2 years?

What are the benefits of it? Share your thoughts.

Biggest disadvantage is the fact you have to be really really sure your mesh is finished before you start painting your textures, as a mesh change means recreating the Ptex uvs (and thus making any texturing you already did obsolete.)

Biggest advantage, true almost stretch-less textures.

I dont think Ptex will ever be a standard. There are some things that are still best suited to UV mapping.

One of our last projects was an extremely large wooden framed building. The amount of wood textures was through the roof. We did try "3D-painting" the wood with ptex but could not get the results we wanted. The irregular regularity of wood grain made it hard for us to paint and not make t look awkward to the eye. So we resorted back to uv maps and texturing in photoshop for the beams.

We did use Ptex for other areas though and found it really good.
