View Full Version : Rendering Issue - Shadow

I'm having trouble understanding how shadow and light setup works compared to programs such as Maya or 3Dsmax if anyone is familiar with those.

I will provide pictures if description is not enough.


Whenever I set up a scene with my character, and add in a area/Distant light. The shadow beneath the character seems to be rather random. I animate him doing variouse exercises, and in some scenes there's shadow under his feet or what not. In others, there's no shadow at all showing on the floor. Im using rendersetting backdrop only, with RVP 48. Raytrace shadow is active aswell as the shadow option in the character, light and floor.

Is your light moving in the scene by accident?

Hello, no my light's arent moving =)

However, I have another question. Why is the Shadow Map in the light options unavailable eventhough I enabled it in the render global menu?

I decided to put up a small scene and try to make this a lesson for all of us who dont have indept knowledge about rendering and lighting setup in LW.

What my goal here is to get a clean render, despite the simplicity avoiding over exposed light and showing the shapes of the V.

Im looking for a rounded shadow beneath, without the grain. I can only seem to get this type of shadow from the dome light, however the dome light shadow becomes very grainy. I have to add in a seperate light, which kind of overexpose the scene and hides some of the shadow. I know you can set the quality of shadow up and down and fuizzness and what not in the shadowmap options, but for some reason this is "grayed out" even if I activate it in the render globals.

What I am trying to duplicate is this effect.

I cant seem to get that clay effect, I'll play around with the lighting options some more. Help needed!! =)

You can up the quality of a dome light on the lighting panel and add AA, it will remove the grain. Also, on a scene like this, you may want to use a linear light workflow as that effects the value of shadows greatly. You could be suffering from trying to use a screen-gamma workflow, which can cause you to never get a satisfactory balance of scene brightness and shadow strength.

Personally, where quality of shadow is involved & the 'range' of the light is not, I would use the nice new Dome light rather than area lights, you have far more useful control by adjusting the angle, direction & quality of a dome light than buy tweaking the size, position, direction & quality of an area light
