Roid Ribbit has now evolved into a "Magma Toad" thanks to the amazing texture work of Eric Braddock. Eric has created an amazing color map that should inspire animators out there looking for something to bring to life.

This is a perfect example of artist collaboration. I created the model that was passed on to Kurt Smith for rigging, which was then UV'd by Mike Young. That UV'd model was textured by Eric Braddock that was then used in this Illustration.

I'll be releasing the textured version of this character on my site today so stay tuned.

Second one is better especially the hands. But the first one background is quite cool.
Cheers

Thanks Will! Coming from you, that means a lot!

It's been a lot of fun working with the model, playing with poses and stuff. The rigging is amazing, you have so much control yet it's still very easy to work with.

Here's another image I threw together. I brought the magma texture map into Photoshop and changed the red to green for a totally different look.

Thanks for putting this model together, it's great to work with and an incredible reference for character modeling and setup.

I like that map . a little bit less evil looking .

I was wondering would it be possible to use nodes on certain colour channels to tweak the colour

for example on the reds "first texture" I was thinking of making the reds slighty shift back and forth to create a morph of colours .as if lava was flowing threw his body .

or am I just being completely stupid now ?

I suppose I could keyframe the colour channels in after effects

That's a good idea, it would be pretty easy to isolate the color (just the reds) in photoshop to create a mask that could be used as an alpha for an animated procedural on the luminosity channel.

That's sort of how I did the glowy hands in the fire one. I just made an instance of the color map in the image editor, desaturated it and cranked up the contrast to isolate just the brightest parts of the map. Then I used that on the luminosity channel as an alpha on a gradient driven by the incidence angle, so I was able to get the brighter edge on the hot red parts without the cooler parts of the body being affected.

I don't use nodes nearly as much as I should, so there might be an easier way to do it using them, but my way would basically accomplish the same thing.

@Chris , I seen your tweaked version , and it got me thinking Magma Toad is awesome texturing but AQUATOAD appeals a little more to my scene .

"You could probably use turbulence in the surface editor somewhere to create the flow " .

ps your image is sweeeeter , better comp and lighting :)

Edit I will upload the Texture file but I didn't know if I need permission first ?
didn't do much to be honest , just tweaked the main texture in PS!

Very cool, yea, it's amazing how many options open up just by shifting the colors of the map. I had initially intended to make a blue version for some type of ice scene to compliment the fire toad, but ended up with the green one. I'm anxious to try my hand at animating this thing.

Thanks for sharing this William. It's great work all around. I love the UV art. And the rigging is awesome.

I selected the grays, turned them to darker green, then changed the inverse (reds) to brighter grass green, for a green frog. Looks awesome.
