I started playing with Sketchup yesterday and have been watching the training videos available. This thing really kicks some serious a## for a free app! Makes me wish it was easier to get those models into LightWave's renderer.

sketchup isn't free..there's a free version but for commercial work and all the export stuff you'll need to buy it.

$495

see the differences f rom free to pro versions here

Well, for what it's lacking, it's still pretty sophisticated. And I'm not a pro, I only do 3D for the fun.

And somewhere on the forum is a lwo exporter for the free version. Use it often to convert the free google 3d warehouse models.

Yeah, I found that, but it doesn't look like the links work any more, and looks like it doesn't work in the newer version of Sketchup.

Not a big deal, will just have to "make due" with modeler. ;)

Sketchup is genius.
It's by far the most intuitive modelling application I've ever used.

The walk function is a cracking tool as well.

I'm using it in SU 8. Though the texture gets left out, which for a lot of the 3d warehouse models isn't necessarily a bad thing. ;)

Yep, I totally agree. I remember when SketchUp came out before google bought it. It was just a great new way to approach 3d.

You might want to check out Bonzai3d as well from Autodessys.

They have some very cool workflows as well. Tons of videos....

I've spent enough on LightWave in the last 10 years (and don't use it enough) that I will not be willing to pay for any other software in the near future. I have a new project I've started and am hoping I can stick with it. Life just keeps me so busy I don't have the time I used to.

Just a quick tip: if you want to use the free version to create models and export those, make certain to explode any component (and by exploding, it may mean exploding a component's sub-components several times). Then export as collada, and import in Modeler, Photoshop Extended or Blender, whichever app works best for you.

Without exploding those components, they do not import correctly.

Hmm..I must try that, since the latest sketchup version the collada didn´t import any geometry either to lightwave or vue, it could recognize the collada scene, but nothing is in there.

By the way, the obj exporter is uploaded on these forums..do a search for it, I have posted it.

Here´s the link to the sketchup object exporter from shaxam...And yes it should work with latest sketchup
http://www.newtek.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=89533&d=1288710765

Read more about it and issues that can occour when installing...
http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65906&highlight=sketchup&page=10

You won´t get any texture exported out thou with this.

I would recommend install sketchup 6 or 7 as well wich was working well with exports of collada.
