Since LWCAD is so a superb plugin, I want to model my neighbourhood. I 've visited the WTools3D gallery and admire all det fantastic work done there. But I need plants, hedges, trees like the artists use for their work. Can somebody tell me where to get it.

do some web searches of free 3d models, x-frog might have some..

Otherwise..if you can afford some plugins..sumatra has some bonus content of trees, stones etc..
http://svenart.de/sumatra_about.htm

or tree designer, youll have to creat your own trees thou, not sure about the content within that, lots of leaf foliage thou.
http://www.polas.net/trees/index.php

Autodesk has some free vegetation objects, but only in x-frog,3dmax and maya format.
http://seek.autodesk.com/search/xfrog?resetft=true&count=20&startIndex=40

thereīs some more x-frog free objects out there Im sure, donīt know the links thou.

I got Vue5 once when upgrading LW. Can this program do the job?

Well you can export the trees of course, but youll need to remap leaf texturing wich can be tedious, or simply use other leaf textures or take your own shots.

also the base content of vue treeīs isnīt that big, that is with itīs default tree generator, It is missing some good pine and fir trees.

The later versions of vue I beleive has a few more better treeīs, but
otherwise youīll have to check cornucopia and buy from that market, I beleive they have some very good pine and fir trees.

I hate that cornucopia site thou, e-on should expand on the tree generator and include many many more species than they currently do.

I love the atmospheric engine thou in vue, so easy to set up godrays or volumetric lights affecting trees with the feedback of the previewer..see
sample low quality image..

you can use xfrog and treedesigner to create your own trees.
You also will find a lot of nice trees on turbosquid.

this one is also nice (somehow):

http://arbaro.sourceforge.net/

for populating you can use hdinstance, dpinstance or sumatra.

SvenArt!

Is it possible for you to whip up some images of the full collection of tree and vegetation content available for Sumatra, would be a good selling point if someone can see them all.

prometheus:

I would not buy sumatra only because of the vegetation content. There a lot of models included, but this models are only for the beginning. You maybe still will need more and different trees and plants.

I have planned to add some more models to the collection with the next update (v1.5.1), but im so busy that this can take 1-2 weeks maybe.

You can see images of a few of the plants/trees on the bottom of this page:

http://svenart.de/sumatra_about.htm

Also, there are a few ferns, gras, plants, stones and lowpoly trees included.

Of course I wouldnīt buy it solely for the content, I just wanted to see All of them.

Yes Ivé seen the other images on your page already.

Keep up the good work!

. I tried the Sumatra demo, following the tutorial - making 100 palms. But LW crashed. Probably too many polygons.Or did I something wrong? Maybe it's better to buy a collection of plants and trees (and be finished with it ...)? Does somebody know about where to get it?

Svenart

@ ige: Have you readed the readme file before installing? Have you tried it one time or multiple times? On Pc or mac and wich version of LW?

polygoncount should not be a problem is this case (palmtree has only a few hundred).

Tons of low res tree and foliage sketchup models
http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=1b3355bd5459aca0949a2693b640ef96&ct=mdrm&prevstart=0
Some of these are just card maps. Use the '3D view' to check.

LW export plug for Sketchup-

Have seen a number of other scripts.

Whatīs your system specs? maybe you have to little ram memory, I suggest at least 8,12 ram minimum.

graphics card could have an impact too, at least for viewing and rotating.

Otherwise you should look at instancing tools like HD instance plugin, Im not sure if sumatra could take use of that, Veggipaint can take use of hd instance and kray.

I need to compare the too, before I invest in one of them, would like to see a true tree generator inside one of these plugins, with varitation system in order to get each tree unique.

There is a demo on veggipaint, only limitation is no saving.

As for veggipaint, check here..
http://veggipaint.walen.se/

Hd instance check here.

some images..

http://www.happy-digital.com/instance_gal.php?artistIndex=10&picIndex=3

Radical 3d used HD instance and lightwave on the animal armageddon on discovery, I think they initially tried vue, but came to the conclusion that vue was to slow and used lightwave instead.

Personally I donīt like the still images I see from them, and I think vue enviroments looks much better, but I do understand the comprimize they had to do in order to deliver that show.
I would say thou that it is the general lighting shadows and atmosphere in those images that lacks the quality of realism, not the tree system itself.

Maybe my PC is "too old", Prometheus...? I run XP Home; Pentium 4 3,00 GHz; 2,75 Gb RAM; GEFORCE 9500 GT. I have been thinking of upgrading - getting a brand new pc that works fine for LIghtWave. If you guys can give me advices what components that PC should, have would be superb. The price will of cource also be important - but...

Svenart: I did another try with Sumatra, and left the pc untouched until LW/Sumatra had finished. NO CRASH this time. I must have been too little patient. I tried to paste 100 trees (15000 poly each) =1500000 polys and that worked.

I would like to ask you what your main focus lies in 3d and graphics..
Archviz, landscape matte renders, general 3d animation, heavy vfx particles dynamics?
And what software would you like to use?..and think a little of that you might change course in software depending on where your 3d focus will be in the future.

A windows 7 64 bit system is preferable or windows xp 64, make sure you have both lightwave 32 and 64 installed, some plugins wonīt work on 64 yet.

Get as much motherboard Ram you can afford, that is important for handling large poly objects and try and get as many cores as possible for taking use of hyperthreading, thatīs important for Lightwave 10 VPR and any render inside of lightwave, kray, fprime and viper previews.
The graphics card is also important for handling large poly objects.

I donīt think you can go wrong with Nvidia cards such as gtx 460-480
or even some older lower cards...check this review of gtx 275 sparkle cards from Dj lithium who worked on battlestar galactica, that card seems to have an unusual hight amount of memory.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz_QGYqmjQI&feature=related

I took a long time to decide on graphics card and found that I would like to take use of Cuda and that is something only nvidia cards have so forget about Ati Radeon for that, and many people say it has some driver issues, but I cant say for sure.

The cuda cores in nvidia is something that "almost realtime renders" like
Octane takes advantage of, it renders solely on the gpu and It is in my opinion faster than lightwave vpr or fprime, the bullet physics engine wich is in lightwave core has support for taking advantage of cuda too, some real time fluid simulations and after effects effect filters gain speed from that too.

The ram will cost you, but I wouldnīt suggest to go down below 8 ram, preferably 12 or even more, but that costs.

nvidia gtx 460 or later for graphics card.

Solid state disc drives and get one for system drive and another for storage, but they are so expensive that I choosed a ordinary drive but with 10 000 rpm for system drive and another ordinary drive 7 000 for storage.

the power supply needs to drive all that make sure you have enough.

Anyway, Im not sure Itīs your system giving you hard times with sumatra, it could be wrongly installed or something else there, or using it wrong or even a bug.

At work I got a nvidia zotac 460 and I7 core 950 and 8gb ram, at home I got a little more than that ..see signature.

@ ige: Glad to hear that it worked. Sumatra has been tested a lot and Im using it myself for work often, so I was a little bit shocked after you told me it has not worked with only 100 palms.

Have you maybe started sumatra in modeler and then minimized modeler while running sumatra?

ige
01-18-2011, 09:20 AM
Svenart: No I just made a ground (1 poly rectangle) and loaded trees from a LW content folder. I think it worked just fine - I have not tried the Sumatra Paint yet. Is that where you can place trees and hedges etc? What plants and trees are supplied with Sumatra?

Svenart
01-18-2011, 10:13 AM
with sumatra paint you can select polygons on your mesh (in modeler) and place objects with a hotkey. With pressed hotkey its very close to "painting", if your groundmodel is well subdivided.

http://svenart.de/content/tutorial_sumatra_paint.avi

Sumatra contains 3 Trees, 3 firtrees, 1 palmtree, ferns, stones, gras and a few plants. Also a few lowpoly verisons and variations, and a few terrains for following the tutorials.

At the moment Im working on the next version of sumatra and on a few additional trees/plants. But it will take at least 1-2 weeks before i can release it.
