Hi - I know its probably easy but Im stuck - I want to slice a pillar so it will collapse with rigidbody dynamics - but whats the best way to break it up so I get the internal planes joined on to the relevant block - I've been trying various slicing strategies using boolean but the internal planes dont seem to be joined on to the external polys?? Essentially I want a new surface wherever I slice - is it possible?

I would slice up the pillar with the knife tool and then wherever a division in the pillar occurs, close up the volumes using the polygon 'P' tool; "add points" tool where needed and create new edges between the points with the "connect" 'l' operation. So in the end you will have several CLOSED volumes that fit together perfectly and will fall apart when acted upon by a dynamic object.

thats a good way but I have hundreds to do :) is it the only way?

you can do it best in 3dmax. You can export geometry cache from max to lw.

Dont have max so thats a noooooooo!

Youd think it would be a basic requirement of any 3d app - a few plugs out there such as c4 but seems to have died :(

An updated version of C4 is located at Foundation3d. You need to have an account to download it though.

Voroni seems a bit intermittent as to weather it fills in the new surface polys and foundation 3D keeps generating database errors - ho hum :(

Right.
I believe both tools are using the built-in boolean tool. What's your pillar structure look like? Polys, quads?
Voroni has been said to be a try-it-again kinda thing because of the above. That is to say, "Hm... ...almost {ctrl-z}... " Not a bad thing, mind you, but it can feel tedious after a bit.
