I'm trying to do use the camera mapping tutorial for the following:

I want to show have a CYLINDRICAL map projected via the camera. Also I need to be able to rotate the camera.

Is this possible or will camera mapping only work with planar maps?

Ok, that first sentence didn't make sence...

Basically what I'm asking is if there is a way to make front projection work with cylindrical maps.

nope

each one is a different kind of mapping. Not sure exactly what you want, but a camera map will not wrap around a cylinder, and a cylinderical map will be projected flat.

In that case, is there a way to make from a cylindrical map a planar map?

Make a cylinder, then make a morph map with the cylinder unrolled. Apply the cylindrical map in layout, then apply the morph - the texture will unroll with the cylinder - then render it
