OK here we go again....

working on a logo that the text has a bunch of holes in it and it is proving to be a SERIOUS pain in the.... well um.. you catch my drift.

When i either extrude then bullion or cut out the holes THEN extrude, the face seem to not want to take the logical path for the points. IE the face polygon get all turned around. normal i would just copy the point and retrace but the resolution is high and the point count it a but nuts.

and suggestions

the attachment is just one letter.

No real easy way to do this, but what you can start with is the drill tool. Put the "holes" on one layer and the blocks in another, select the blocks layer with the holes in a background layer, then use CONSTRUCT > DRILL and select STENCIL and whatever axis would cut into the blocks. You'll have to wait a bit and do some cleanup, but this will get you started.

I find it helps to have a mesh to stencil/tunnel on rather than a solid face.

The cut outs are fine on the model... It's just that the large polys on either side don't have any holes cut out of them. So you can't see them.

The Bevel++ plug-in can combine points when they overlap in bevel operations on sharp corners. It might not work perfectly all the time (especially on drastic bevels) but it beats having to move points around or weld them manually.

Thank every one for you input it has helped a lot.

XChrisX thanks for the video and wound up using this method step by step BUT ended up with different results. Stencil is seemingly the best route for me for this application but when i do exactly what you do there are still a few "holes" that just will not play nice. So i have gone through, almost, one by one to see what going on and it seems to be specific ones and not to sure i understand why.

any thoughts?

I am SO past the time frame of actually doing this point by point, but seeing i have opposing thumbs and this piece of crap logo does not.. I MUST WIN!!

I am learning a lot along the way so i guess i dont mind :)

I used the Knife tool to divide the complex flat faces into smaller manageable chunks. Then did a couple of pieces at a time by selecting only the chunk I needed to add holes to. If there are multiple holes that cause errors, I break them into individual layers and perform the function one Tunnel function at a time.

One of the "holes" I redrew because it absolutely refused to Tunnel properly. The resulting mesh looked almost like a point order error. So I killed the poly and traced the points and recreated it.

so seeming it was he the cutting with the knife tool and separating them out that did the trick then?

I find it helps. When it is trying to Core/Tunnel/Stencil, you are creating really complex polys. By cutting them into smaller chunks you create more manageable geometry for Modeler to work with.

Lets look at that letter "S" with the holes cut in it, that face is roughly 950 points. Cut that into chunks and the one piece with the most holes in it is now roughly a third of that many. Less points, less work for the software.

Similarly, instead of trying to Tunnel everything at once, a few at the time. If they still have trouble, try them one at a time, narrowing down problem pieces.

"bulin wall" is a bit more my speed :)

Dexter2999, guess it never occurred to me to use it like that. what i had been doing is using knife to cut only as far in as needed to get to what i was drilling out.

The amazing thing is, there isn't even a WIKI entry for the soup or the cubes!!!! Weird!

Hmmm, I finally looked at the geometry: the "I" looked fine to me. Extruded the "fish", it looked fine too. ???

Just a helpful hint. Get yourself a copy of ZAXWERKS.
Doing allot of this type of work myself, and Zaxwerks makes very quick work of it, also gives you the flexibility to tweak it on the fly. You just import your eps into it, extrude the way you want, in the style you want, then export out to a .lwo file.

actually, you only need this part of the suite..

ignore the cheesy render for the internal render, you are just looking at the model, which is quite tight.

Zaxwerk software looks a bit WYSIWYG but cool. Is the cash spent worth it for some of the other stuff besides ProModeler?
