I have been evaluating Maya, 3DMax, and Cinema4d with trial versions. Comparing them to lightwave, and figuring out what they are best at.

I did a collision test in 3D max and lightwave with a stack of boxes, included in the zip file. 3D Max seems alot more natural than the test in Lightwave. Unless im missing an important setting.

My biggest thing is finding the best software for dynamic/collision cababilites. And creating clouds fire/explosions. Whats your thoughts?

Have you looked at Houdini?

sure, 3ds max has FumeFX but...

Check out halfway through video 4 showing Blur's collision/fx work in the Warhammer online trailer. Really great work.

I tried Blender for explosions. But It seems I cannot mix emitters together. Whenever I overlap emitters together to create more complex effects, only the smoke from one emitter renders and the rest get obscured. Theres also not many examples or tutorials on Blender making huge explosions. Mostly just fire.

Chapter 2 and 4, crowd scene, fumefx, hairfx, xsi ca to 3dmax via pointcache, mentalray. Cool info!

I been struggling with lightwave hardfx for a while. Here are some images explaining my problem. I built a radio tower thing, and I want to hit it with a cannon ball. I apply hard fx to the tower, and collision to the ball and ground plane.

The ball should hit the middle of the tower and the higher parts of the tower should come tumbling down. Although, the top of the tower seams to ignore theres nothing left under it to keep it holding!

I have start by collision checked in the hardfx options for the tower.

I know I can keyframe everything but I want to know if this is possible in lw's dynamics.

Thanks!

Yeah, a lot of info in that presentation. I've seen the particle flow setup for crowds before. It's a nice poor mans Massive.
