I'm wondering if NewTek has ever tried to get a trial version put on the DVD for magazines like 3D World of 3D Artist. I've never seen it on there.

The demo version of LW (discovery mode) is so heavily limited that, to all intents and purposes, it is utterly useless. Most other vendors have long since decided to go for full, time-limited trials or non-time-restricted versions using non-commercial formats and varying degrees of render watermarking (e-on being excessively heavy-handed with their watermarks, making the resulting image worthless).

The other issue is the continuing absence of effective, efficient learning material. There's no new user-centric 'getting started' guide in the shipping documentation which, given LW's messy toolset, is vital to avoid users simply giving up.

yeah Lw totally needs this. 30 day triel with no huge limitations, only restriction for commercial use and may be watermarks, and most important a good documentaion.
Due to the fact Lw is structured differently from other programs, with Modeler and Layout, users needs to understand better what's possible in Modeler and what's possible in Layout, understand the inherent logic of the app, so users will feel better in the learning process.
This could also be made very well through a good series of instructional vids, project based, maybe to go though a complete pipeline for a small but nice & complete project.

newtek should do a starving artist version at $99...non commercial version with a small watermark in one corner of the render with the newtek logo...don't make it HIDEOUS like the old maya ple watermark though! and limit the render res to say 720x405 pixels which is reasonable but not tv/dvd or film res....abit like Houdini

modeler should be limited to 50,000 polys just like the softimage mod tool is...or 1500 points per layer
then go ask the newtek community for a stack of FREE training videos to be made...i'd pitch in if that would help!

Their used to be a really cheap version. I forget what it was called, I only learned about it after it was gone.

AAAggggghhhh! LightWave has had a 30-day unlimited trial since 9! All you need to do is register it and it works as a completely full version. There's on major limitation that is completely understandable: commercial plugins don't work (they usually need a dongle ID). Other than that it functions exactly as a full version of LightWave.

yeh...maybe someone has tried to run the lw10 beta... no 30days with that !

still believe a starving artist version would really help..

That would have been Inspire3D

Frankly I think it would be great to have a LW10 edition priced at the original 895.00 and an addition with LW10+CORE at whatever so that people can get into LightWave3D now for a decent price and wait and decide to upgrade when core becomes, well.. more like LightWave and less... whatever it is now.

That's a good idea! I've discovered many programs thanks to 3D World.

Or they do and switch into a demo mode... :D

Ah yes Inspire 3D.

I thought LW was priced at 895? That's what it says on the Buy Now page.

NewTek tried to relaunch Inspire3D a year or two ago. Better they focus in bringing better tools, not crippled ones.

In one issue, 3D World DID have a demo version of Lightwave. In 2001, I think. I still have the CD if you would like to have a look. ;)

That was back when it really would have just been the discovery version.

PS. For anyone who wants to give the demo version a go, all you need do is start LightWave without your dongle, note the 12-digit serial number and register it on http://reg.newtek.com. You'll get a 30-day license key.

So if the got it into 3D World or another magazine all they would have to do is include a note that told you how to get the 30 day license.

NT / Lightwave have been in 3DA recently , I am not sure about 3Dworld "think they had add running frontpage-insert, but a lot of LW artists have been involved with 3DW recently, ie Tobian , Proton , Lee , Ten24 and including Ben who writes stunning features . tbh there has been a small tilt of LW publicity "which can only be positive "

I got it here in Ireland just before Christmas.

Yes, I received mine just before Christmas as well. If you do not receive your copy in the next two or three weeks then I suggest you call their subs dept and I'm sure they will get a replacement out to you.
