It's a rather vague question "sorry", but if you wanted a forum what you go for and why ?

I have looked at opensource - paid IpBoards seems to winning it so far , I like vbulletin but your talking alot of cash ,same with ipboards , any recommendation for free open source ,maybe I missed some out .

I will be probing  you further with more random questions :)

SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/) is what we use, and I quite like it.

Cheers,
Mike

I was using the opensource phpBB on my website, and I really liked it. Additionally, the user community there is very helpful, especially to absolute beginners like I was.

I did have a problem at one point with too many spambots trying to get in, which nearly turned me off from the software, but then with the last upgrade I downloaded, phpBB added new features that seemed to take care of this problem.

I stopped using it anyway about four months later though, but only because after a couple of years of being online nobody used it except for me and my cats.

Here's the link: http://www.phpbb.com/

Edit: I meant to clarify that even when it was allowing bots in to attempt a registration, it did not allow them to post. It was just a hassle for me to verify if they really were bots and delete their accounts. But, like I said, this stopped being a problem for me with the upgrade.

phpBB is the best option IMO.

Having used several others also I would go for phpBB all the time now.
