There are a free soft that is a clone of AutoCad for 2D.
For both, windows and Mac OS

For a free 2D-only package, not too shabby. A nicely flexible 2D package, with lots of pro touches (esp. Dassault's beautiful eSnap/eGrab system).

And this one too. The NX software on this site used to be Unigraphics through McDonnell Douglas, though this software (Solid Edge) works with it, this is only the 2D version.

Most companies whet your appetite with their 2D software so you get interested in buying their full 3D design package.
