View Full Version : New Virtual camera will offer Avatar-like capture on the cheap.

A Scottish group of games researchers is launching a 'virtual camera' that mimics techniques pioneered in James Cameron’s Avatar. Based on a Nintendo Wii-like motion controller, it will cost under $200.

Using Cameron's Simul-cam, the image is processed in real-time as it's recorded, before it reaches the director’s monitor screen. This allows actors in motion-capture suits to be instantly seen as the blue Na’vi characters, without days spent creating computer-generated images.

And by hooking up a virtual camera – where a computer enhances what a film camera could achieve – to a highly-accurate motion-controller, the University of Abertay Dundee researchers say they've been able to do the same
Kind of important if Lightwave is getting virtual camera features.

On that same line, Razer is already calling on game developers to integrate their non-inertial 1:1 6-axis motion sensing controller. I don't think they'd mind if a 3D-app developer hit the link.

Is it the same as this one?

I wonder if this will work for LW's new virtual camera system controls. I hope so.

It looks like the same. Same brand and product name.

Seems an order of magnitude better than a 3D-mouse (just when they finally were going to get supported!), at least for virtual camera work.

That does look very cool, especially if it works with the LW virtual camera.
