yep. would love to see newtek consider us guys in your next update. i am constantly frustrated how almost everything in lw is designed around animation. for example image resolution in pixels only and render preview in tv aspect ratio. render in cmyk would be fantastic, no more conversion from rgb to cmyk and the flat colors screw up!

is a great application for print though.

We are using it at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a lot of other newspapers are, also. Whether they hang out here is another thing

I use it for some of our proposals (some) and/or client presentations at Brown and Caldwell. Unfortunately, it's mostly boring engineer type work (no offense to engineers!). Wastewater treatment, etc. Nothing real exciting, that's for sure.

Yes, everything we do is either for print (90%), web or animations for internal use. I have not put anything to tape in over 4 years!

well, I don't render for print as in magazines etc. but nearly everything I render needs to be printed out, if that makes sense!!! (product concepts - visualisation etc.)

I've been using LW for a little over three years now -- even made some money at it (architectural viz).
And I keep telling myself that I really should learn a little about animation one of these days...:p

I do. Mostly for ads, where a client wants to show a product that we've been doing visualization work on.

Recently did a test run of some poster art, too. Worked out well for the client, and we'll probably do more of it. (It wouldn't have been easy without Frenchwave's SplitRender scripts, though! :) )

We do to. Want examples. look at half the newport ads next time you're in the corner grocer. Many are LW models. Same goes for alot of those bacardi magazine ads and billboards.

More Print tools would be a great help,

So Proton are we getting some tools to help with Rendering out our Monster size files? :)

We "plot" most of what we do. Hang it up on a wall 36" x 72" to make our pitch to the client.

Can't seem to attach pics.. Hmm.

Take a look at the girder underneath the platform. It rests on the small yellow plate which has two bolts sticking from it. The Girder is unattached. There's going to be an accident!

1) move the virtual memory page-file to an HD/partition with lot of free space (it's faster on an empty HD/partition)
2) don't fix the page-file (let Windows use it as better as it wants)

Not the final solution but this little trick helped me a lot many many times!

Hoping LW will soon have a better memory management!

Hy guys'n'gals...

I've been following thise monster print size thread for some time now (and we've hed the problems as well).
Now, before I put on my thinking cap, I have a couple of Qs:
* What kind of file formats do you render into?
* What kind of final mage sizes do you output.
* Are your problems mainly RAM or CPU related (too long to render, or too much swapping).
* Do you use any of the LW image/pixel filters, lens flares or motion blur? Could you do without?

I have this idea (yeh, like number 14 on my list...), and I just want to know if it makes sense to pursue it further...

Format: Usually TGA's.

Final output image sizes: Typically we render at close to 24"x36" @ 300dpi -- 7200 x 10800. No full bleed renders yet, but it could happen I guess, and then it'd be a little bigger. Hey Mike, :-)

Usually not. If we break something up into chunks with SplitRender, the geometry and buffer allocation often take a long time to load for each mini-scene. So I try to knock it all out in one pass instead of having to run it through a couple times.

As it is, the Photoshop layered files with all the other elements get to be 300-500 MB. 2 or 3 more full-sized layers from LightWave and those PSD file might get really huge.

I'm surprised no one else has offered to answer your questions. A lot of people were sounding off about using LW for print earlier.

Hiya again BoulYaBase (no point in making a daft joke twice ;) ),

Well, let me just lay out my thoughts...
Pixel Filters in Lightwave can send out rays to trace into the scene. This is for example how the special projection plugin renders spherical image maps and such...
Now, if a plugin were to take the camera settings, and raytrace an image scanline after scanline, and then directly saved the result of each scanline to disk, there wouldn't be the need for a huge image buffer.
You could tell LW to render at 16x16 pixels, the pixel filter starts up, halts the LW render, and starts tracing away at any resolution you choose.
Antialiasing would have to be handled by the plugin, not by LW, and you couldn't use mage filters or lens flares, and all effects based on time/motion blur wouldn't work (like spinning lights :( ), since the pixel filter can only raytrace the image at one point in time. Still, this might be useful to some...

I thought I would post this image as it was one of the biggest renders that I have done 7000x5000 pixels. The image was used on a self-promo billboard for my company. the final file that went to print was about 315MB.

(Dual 800 G4, 256 MB Ram)

Use it quite abit! I love the fact that you recognize us. Especially the MAC platform which is heavy in commercial print! Especially since you hear so much about MAYA for the MAC. They advertise it everywhere:mad: I'm glad Mac isn't the bastard child for Lightwave. Please keep bring MAC up to par with the PC version!
